GIZAB, Uruzgan – Afghan authorities are blaming al-Qaeda-linked militants for burning mosques and holy books in parts of Afghanistan.
Gen. Juma Gul Hemat, police chief of Uruzgan Province, told Central Asia Online by telephone that al-Qaeda-linked militants burned a mosque in the Gerai area of the Gizab District November 19.
“Dozens of holy books of Koran and many other religious books caught fire in the incident,” Hemat said. “They (the militants) have set fire to the mosque because we have driven them out from the region ... and now they are trying to retaliate against civilians,” he said.
International forces in Afghanistan joined the government in condemning the insurgents’ destruction of the mosque located.
Insurgents set the mosque on fire, and in the process violated the Islamic ethical code of conduct by burning as many as 20 Korans in the process. The decision to burn the mosque came from senior insurgent leaders located in Pakistan, according to an ISAF press release.
Afghan authorities are working to identify those responsible for the attack.
