  • Abu Dhabi: 11 Million$ of Diamonds, Jewels on Tree

    ABU DHABI (AFP) –

Christmas came in extravagant fashion to the Muslim desert emirate of Abu Dhabi as a glitzy hotel unveiled a bejewelled Christmas tree valued at more than 11 million dollars on Wednesday.

It is the "most expensive Christmas tree ever," with a "value of over 11 million dollars," said Hans Olbertz, general manager of Emirates Palace hotel, at its inauguration.

The 13-metre (40-foot) faux evergreen, located in the gold leaf-bedecked rotunda of the hotel, is decorated with silver and gold bows, ball-shaped ornaments and small white lights.

But the necklaces, earrings and other jewellery draped around the tree's branches are what give it a record value.

    AP/Hussein Malla
It holds a total of 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and other precious stones, said Khalifa Khouri, owner of Style Gallery, which provided the jewellery.

"The tree itself is about 10,000 dollars," Olbertz said. "The jewellery has a value of over 11 million dollars -- I think 11.4, 11.5."

Asked if the tree might offend religious sensibilities in the United Arab Emirates, where the vast majority of the local population is Muslim, Olbertz said he did not think it would [- !!!]
It's a very liberal country," he said.

The hotel has had a Christmas tree up in previous years, but this year "we said we have to do something different," and the hotel's marketing team hatched the plan, said Olbertz.

The [Emirates Palace] hotel, which bills itself as seven-star, in February introduced a package for a seven-day stay priced at one million dollars.

Takers of the package have a private butler and a chauffeur driven Maybach luxury car at their disposal during their stay, as well as a private jet available for trips to other countries in the region.

And in May, the hotel opened a gold vending machine, becoming the first place outside Germany to install
"gold to go, the world's first gold vending machine," said Oriente Lux, the German company behind the machine.

Regarding both of your last posts: yes it's a crying shame, with all the suffering everywhere.

The hotel could have sent a dollar almost to every Afghan family.

Look how they are catering to Western guests, to make them feel at home over the holidays.
I bet the type of person who would visit that hotel would not be even going to a Church service for Christmas.

Hence an even more catastrophic waste of money.

You are right, Unknown, as far as your conclusion. The beneficiaries of the Arab oil wealth have sunk to their lowest point - SO far.
What will they come up with next, God forbid?

^ I guess they do pay it, if a 7 day stay goes for a mere million...

Don't we have members here who reside around here?

Maybe if they get bored this week, they could go check out the decoration in the lobby "a little different this year".

so it's okay for some one to wear 11 million dollar's worth of diamonds in jewelery but it's (o my God, how could they?!) -when it's hanged from a tree....??? it's wrong because it's hanging from a tree that has nothing to do with islam????

diamonds are overrated and so is dualism.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

Shame on them, they could have built 11 Mosques instead in other Muslim countries.
Life is like posing for pictures. We pose the way we want to be seen by others. But stolen shots are better. They capture who we really are...

11 Mosques is a GOOD idea.

What's funny is that I just saw on the list of top Yahoo Searches,
this 11 Million $ Tree is number 3 at the moment...
                        so it's attracting worldwide attention.

Due to that -- or maybe our sage comments here on PF ? --,
the Emirates Palace released a typical corporate-ese statement which said little.

It clearly sought to play down the ostentatious gesture and squarely place the blame on the jeweller himself for the idea.

its all done to attract tourists, to sell the jewellery... its mistaken for show off but these people actually know what they are doing. they make alot of money like this. the tree has jewellery sets hanging from it that are exquisite and beautiful!... these jewellery are provided by famouse gold and diamond sellers... i.e. damas jewellery and etc.

i actually liked one of the jewellery set and if i were to visit this place and i had enough money i would buy it for myself... i hope u guys get the point lol... they dont spend a single dirham on it... they bring the jewellery display it for business and marketing purpose, sell it or advertise their businesses, and then take it back!...
