  • The lowly status of Pashtuns during Taleban era

I remember back in 1999-2000, Pakistan (Aug 14) day was being held. And, they were holding it in front of the parliament house ....There is usually a military parade on this day broadcaste live on PTV (Pakistan Television). That day, I was with a friend in Islamabad and we were watching the event....Representatives of Taleban were also attending the ceremony.

On PTV, there were two non-Pashtuns (Punjabi) and one Pashthana, Maryana Baba, covering the event and acting as commentators. The Taleban ministers were dressed in their usual baggy shalwar and with long almost two-feet beards each (they were two in number), very uncouth looking. The camera will again and again focuss on them and the Punjabis commentators would sort of try to pinch Maryana Babar with humuliating questions to make her feel ashamed...And she really, was feeling emabarrassed...One Punjabi commentator asked her whether she speaks the same dialect as Taleban....There were some Pujabis also sitting with us and they would break into laughter when the camera will focus on the Taleban ministers. Afterwards, there was a long talk about Pashtuns with the usual jokes, etc. with special reference to Taleban...

Another thing that I remember was that, this Nawai Waqt newspaper used to highlight Taleban victories calling them good Muslims, brave warriors, etc. When these Taleban conquered Mazar Sharif they celeberated the victory that Pakistani journalists also attended. The journalists from Nawa-i-Waqt then wrote an article as how uncouth were the Taleban leaders and Pashtunsand even they didn't know how to eat...

One can clearly see how do they use Taleban as stooges but then humuliate them as well...Of course those that get used by others not for their own interests (partial or complete) have no respect in the eyes of their lords.

Look at Mullah Abul Salam Zaif,,, Although he had dimplomatic immunity, he was handed over by his mentors i.e. pakistanis like a chicken to American...

What a bad has these Taleban brought to Pashtuns.

Another thing that happened to me was that I met an official of Gulbuddin Hikmatyar's party...we had a long gossip.... he told me during conversation that I asked Ijazul Haq (son of Ziaul Haq) why you abandoned us (this was after Taleban victory and ouster of Gulbuddin partyl)...and I was kind of shocked by his slavish mentality...

About Gulbuddin, there was an influential personality in Peshawar who also was the principal of a famous college of Peshawar. He is now late. He had told someone very reliable that Gulbuddin had kind of suggested that why not kill ANP leadrship....just like we eliminated communists in Afghanistan....That person said that I told him that our politics is not lthat style.

Afzal Khan Lala of Swat once held a seminar on Pashtun Qaumi Wahdat (Pashtun unification)...He had also invited Taleban official but they didn't turn up ...obviously, how could they in their client status...

There were speculations that Mullah Rabbani had been killed by Pakistani intelligence appartus because he was somewhat more independent minded...

In medicine, If a cancer takes over, you either die or fight it, you don't choose to nourish it with more carcinogens because well there is no healthy tissue left.

Leadership is nourished, prospered, produced. It doesn't occur de novo in a vacuum. the population has to allow it. If you kill or wish to harm any one with a new idea, how will a new idea form. If you kill or wish to harm any one who can help you in the future but is now a headache, don't expect to be helped in the future because you cannot swallow it now.

Taliban are in commanding position in certain circles because every one else is dead or dying. Rise up for the those you wish to see as your leader.

What kind of a leader do you want, what kind of law do you want that leader to follow, what are the consequences of that leadership and of those laws, run it in your head, lets discuss it. And if it makes sense go for it, step wise, a drop at a time.

I agree with toramana, nawa'-e-wakt still support islamic extremism.

Jasmine has sympathies with talibans because she belongs to kandahar.

This is your own subjective interpretation of your own experience. So its bound to be distorted by our own misconceptions in such as a way that you affirm your own preconception selectively....if you know what i mean.

I don't buy it. I personally don't think that Pakistanis see them self as higher ups of Afghans. Their culture is a copy of ours. Their script, their dialect their aspirations are all copied from afghans. Rather "modern pakis", who u refer to as punjabis, have always looked down on the rural folks who still follow tribal costumes. Of course Pakistan is in competition with india, from the beginning, in emulating the west...so their kind of embarrasement towards the bearded mullah is EXACTLy like yours. This is what truly sickens you deep down...as you try to cope with this obvious commonality between you and them.

                just my opinion... : D

Laser-ray insight here in that last part!

I doubt those Pakistanis were THAT upset anyway. Maybe just slightly teasing.
It's not like they don't all remember their own villages from whence they came.
They ARE the same religion, after all, which respects beards.

It's not like a pair of animist Fiji Islanders showed up at the event pounding native drums or something!

Oh, lonely lady, lonely lady....the aim here was't to show whether Pakistanis (your old friends) are right or wrong ...It is to, what do they really think of their clients i.e., Taleban....And yes, you may be true theoritically but you know no amount of moral congruence can place a master and a slave on the same level...

By the way, how is the Cold War buddy Hamid Gul? Which jehad project is he working on right now? Any hint?

                        Toramana,

Maybe you would care to inscribe YOUR name on this card to Obama?!!
There's still more than enough space left for you, Edris, MiG jet fighter [note the Red Army star has already preceded him next to the Soviet signature...!]

Hurry while this limited time offer lasts! For the topic of America in Afghanistan may be dead news in not too long.

Then those long-bearded ones may return. Better not to ridicule them. Hurry and apologize!

Ok, ok, ...pay my homage to the Emperor (of holly warriors) ...tell him, got the message....and will be in my shoes....By the way, portraying Obama like that is not according to the moral principles of Islam or Christianity...smacks of racism...

^ Caricatures are caricatures. That was not unflattering.
Is your avatar really closely resembling YOU? No, it's a symbol of a refugee, I assume. Maybe a Toramanellina?!

Images don't have to exactly correspond.

So you mean you WILL be signing up for a second stint with the H's now?

Dust off that chartreuse designer turban, and get ready, even if it's just to go accept your Emmy award for Best Actor from the Amir-Emperor when he returns Inshallah
