  • The Awami National Party’s chief Asfandyar Wali Khan was offered the post of presiden

PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party’s chief Asfandyar Wali Khan was offered the post of president but he turned it down, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said here on Wednesday, confirming a disclosure made in a US diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks.

“Asfandyar Wali Khan received the offer to become the president but he declined,” he said in reply to a question.

“Our party didn’t have the support required for the post and we could not accept the offer,” he said.

The cable released by WikiLeaks said the offer had been made by army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

“The ANP believed that the post of the president should be held by the party having the required number of seats in parliament,” the minister said.

However, he said, it was a matter of immense pride that a Pakhtun leader had been offered the job.He (Asfandyar) consulted the party and it was decided to decline the offer because it would have been inappropriate to hold a post to which it was not entitled constitutionally.

Mr Hussain also said that Afghanistan was about to witness a massive change.

“The Afghan armed groups, including the Taliban, will part ways with Al Qaeda. The local militants will lay down arms after an internal agreement there,” he said.

Eventually, he said, a national government would be set up in Afghanistan with representation of all parties.

JUI-F DENIAL: However, the JUI-F refuted a startling revelation made in another cable that its chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had sought US help to become the prime minister during a meeting with the US ambassador Anne Patterson.

The maulana is on a visit to Cambodia as head of a Kashmir Committee delegation.

The information secretary of his party termed the disclosure a blatant lie and part of the US plan to tarnish the image of political personalities.
“The JUI is an ideological party,” Maulana Mohammad Amjad Khan said on phone from Lahore. “We believe in parliamentary politics. We would never seek anybody’s help, let alone that of the Americans, to enter the corridors of power through the backdoor,” he said.

He said Maulana Fazl had neither held a secret meeting with the former American ambassador nor asked for her help to become the prime minister.
“We don’t do deals,” he said.

When ANP decided to run for election...i was very surprised and wrote in Khyberwatch Hujra how it has the potential to damage the Pashton nationalism...i was very suspicion when diehard Pakis like Shireen Mazari and others were calling for Nationalist gov in Peshawar…while the ANPwala folks responded with gaining power and using it for pashton nationalism cause…this news clearly indicates that it’s the other way around…Punjabistan is using pashton nationalism in order to minimized the damage of growing and cultivation their Taliban cash crops. Indeed the killing of nationalist leader by hand of Taliban proves that other then personal gain(well know corruption) ANP has gain nothing by coming to power. On other hand the decision of Achaikzia saheeb has proven to be very wise…its time for Pashton nationalism to stay on sideline…gain strengthen and strike at heart of enemy when time is right.

Achakzai too, has joined hands not so long ago with these Jamiets. but yeah some of the things he says is good.
MI6 ! You have completely ignored the real context of the foundation of APDM. Jamiat Islami, JI, ANP etc. were already part of the alliance which intially decided to boycot any elections that would be held under Musharaf's authority. It was PPP which violated the agenda of APDM and joined hands with Musharaf by covertly signing NRO. PML, JUI, ANP etc. followed them. It was a great dishonesty and opportunism on part of these parties which broke their promise.

PkMAP followed the intial stand of APDM and so is laudable for its principled stance but instead you have blamed it for its honesty and integrity.

The recent Wikileaks about Paki politics are an eye opener for those who took part in elections held under Musharf whereas the political scene is still controlled by the powerful Paki Army. Had Musharaf been punished for the violation of constitution, it would be a changed political scenario now where army would have lost much of its control by manipulating politics and projecting puppet political leadership in Pakistan.

In my college bacha khan welfare society was running patriotic pakistani songs in their functions, i am surprised that members here view ANP as separatist anti-pakistani party. They cant oppose pakistan and its army, they are given warnings by killings of their members.
Achakzai ba pata walagi de cho mal ye membrans target shi ya hakomat k raishi.

I am dead sure that you even don't understand the meaning of the word Tajik and rashly generalise it for all dari speaking afghans.

When has Achakzai ever declare his group as a sepratest group fighting for the freedoms of Pashtuns.

Last I heard he was fighting for the rights of smaller minorities of Pakistan.

He is member of Pakistans government. He has declared himself a Pakistani.

There is no such thing as a Sepratist Nationalist Pashtun movement in Pakistan or even in Afghanistan.

They hear Achakzai say a few things and his supporters screem lar o bar Afghan, but they are very much happy in Pakistan and have made no cause to join with Afghanistan.

Achakzai walks around with his Armed bodyguards yet he lives right next door to the Quetta Shura, why is he so afraid of attacking the Taliban who mass murder Pashtuns and Pashtun Nationalists?

How come only ANP members are being slaughtered and brutalised?

How come he is very silent on the Karachi Issue?

Its all a Tuka Takara! A big joke! None of these guys are leading anybody but themselves.

Afghanistan in its current state is just a name not even a country, Its own citizens turned their country into rumble in the name of Islam.

Its a very terrible state but rest assured, these Politicians who wave the Pashtun flag are no different than Persian kings of Afghanistan and the Chaundries of Punjab.
MI6 ! You have very superficial and naive views about Pashtun/afghan politics. It will take you some time to really understand things.

You are right, Khyaal that ANP, JI and PPP were part of the alliance against the Dictator Musharraf. JI and Imran decided to boycot the elections because Qazi of JI knew that after living MMA he wont be able to get sufficient seats same was the case with Imran....Poor Achakzai fell in their trap and he gave with them while Asfandiyar refused to boycot the elections because he and his party always believe on the political struggle they didnot wanted to leave the wicket for Mullah Diesal and his partners....a bycott would certainly resulted in the formation of JUI led govt; in the province and they all knew what JUI and co. did in the province for the past few years......on the other hand Achakzai saib gave a chance to anti pakhtun elements like PMLQ etc to form a government in Balouchistan ......and now a days he is cursing himself for the mistake, while ANP after coming in power did a lot for the people of the province like renaming the province according to the wishes of the people, gaining provincial rights (under 18th amendment) had Achakzai saib not boycoted the election a Nationalist led govt in Balouchist would have been a great help to ANP and they would have been able to grab much powers for the war torn nation in both the provinces.......Kho achakzai saib ba sok pa dey poey kee....It has been his habit to gave with anti pakhtun elements like Qazi, Hameed gul etc and to waste his energy in issued that has been never related to pakhtuns like he did for the restoration of a CJ of pakistan....kho che kala khabara da pukhtano raashe noo he is criminally silent on the massacre of pakhtuns in Balouchistan, karachi FATA etc.....Afsos......
