KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Two Information Technology (IT) centres with 56 computers and internet facility were inaugurated at the University of Kandahar on Monday.
Kandahar Governor Muhammad Toryalai Wesa, Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Abdul Rahim Hussainyar, Vice-Chancellor of Kandahar University Dr Hazrat Mir Totakhel and US Ambassador Karl Eikenberry attended the inaugural ceremony.
The centres were built at a cost of $142,000, provided by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazrat Mir Totakhel told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the two centres, one with 41 computers for boys and the other with 15 for girls, had been connected with a fast internet which would enable students to widen their intellectual horizons.
Toryalai Wesa, who thanked the US for establishing the centres, asked it to connect the university with international educational institutes to help enhance the capacity of students and teachers.
For his part, Ambassador Eikenberry promised to assist the Kandahar University in the future as well. He said the US had been assisting Afghan students who wanted to study in India.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Abdul Rahim Hussainyar said he had noted problems of students. He assured he would discuss them with officials in Kabul.
The Kandahar University was established in 1989 by the incumbent governor. At that time, there were only 11 students but now their number has reached 3,000. It has 162 teachers.
When established, the University had only two faculties, but now their number has gone up to eight. Two of them are located in neighbouring Helmand province.
