  • Germany to donate $30.6 million for road project

Germany is donating $30.6 million for the design of Kunduz-Balkh road, according to an agreement signed on Wednesday. Afghan Finance Minister Dr. Omer Zakhilwal and Michael Wenzel, head of transport and communications at the German development bank, signed the agreement in Kabul.
The road will not only connect the northern provinces of Kunduz and Balkh but will form part of Afghanistan’s ring road, Zakhilwal said.
The money would pay for the design of the road from Kunduz province to Khulm district of Balkh province and the asphalting of 30 kilometres of the total 102km road.
He thanked Germany for its assistance and urged other donating nations to invest in infrastructure projects.
Afghan deputy minister of public works, Eng. Ahmad Shah, said to asphalt the entire 102km road would require $80 million.
According to Wenzel, Germany will discuss funding the remaining part of the road with the Afghan government unless other donors provide assistance.
Germany has promised $1.5 billion to Afghanistan and has donated $1 billion so far.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
