  • Two-Year Teacher's education program launched in KP

PESHAWAR: The inauguration ceremony of a two-year Associate Degree in Education (ADE) programme was held at the Regional Institute of Teacher Education (RITE) here Friday.
Secretary Elementary and Secondary Education Muhammad Farid Qureshi, Director Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education (DCTE) Attaullah Khan, Director Education FATA Fazle Manan, Director Schools Syeda Sarwat Jahan, Chief of Party Pre-Service Teacher Education Programme in Pakistan (Pre-STEP) Dr. Mahmoodul Hassan and other officials attended the ceremony.
The newly-introduced programme has been a joint venture of Provincial Departments of Education and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) with support through its Pre-STEP programme.
Education is the key to development in the country. Development goals can only be achieved if the government emphasises on teachers' education, said Farid Qureshi while addressing the participants at the ceremony.*
He also thanked Pre-STEP and USAID for extending technical and financial support in launching the new degree programme.
"We are pleased to announce that there is equal male-female enrollment from all districts of the province and also FATA has been included for enrollment."*
Attaullah also mentioned that in order to meet the future needs of the teachers, 50% seats have been reserved for arts and 50% for science students.
Moreover, the E&SE department has ensured that admissions are based on admission test organised by ETEA.**
In his address, Sarwat Jahan said that the programme was a milestone in the history of education in the province.
She added, "These students are going to be the future leaders equipped both with content and modern skills."
The Pre-STEP programme is a $75 million USAID funded programme working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and HEC to improve the quality of basic education in the country by strengthening teachers' education and teaching skills.
Pre-STEP collaboratively builds upon the existing structures and programmes in the country and supports 15 universities and 75 teacher colleges as instruments for change of academic standards in teacher education.
The ADE programme is designed to be offered in four semesters.
This will be a significant change from the annual system followed by RITEs, and the hybrid annual/semester system followed by some universities in Pakistan. - APP
