  • Legislators for revival of flood-hit agriculture sector

PESHAWAR (APP): Legislators of Khyber Pakhtukhwa Assembly on Friday called for early restoration of the irrigational channels destroyed in the recent super floods in province to help restore agriculture sector and stand the people on their feet. The legislators were participating in the debate on the destruction and relief activities initiated after the devastated flood in the affected districts. The matter was discussed under the adjournment motion tabled by Malik Mohammad Qasim (JUI) member from district Karak. Opening debate on the matter, the mover Malik Qasim alleged discrepancies in the data collected by the government through machinery regarding the losses occurred due to floods. He said that the district has been ignored in the distribution of relief goods and despite the destruction of hundreds of houses only 100 tents were provided to them. Leader of the Opposition, Akram Khan Durrani called for the restoration of the confidence of the donors to attract foreign assistance. He said that rains and flood have played havoc with the agriculture sector. He said that the sowing season of wheat has arrived and urged the government to direct the departments of communication & works and Agricultural Engineering to provide their machinery for leveling the affected agricultural farms. He also expressed reservations over mismanagement and misappropriation in the distribution of relief goods by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). In majority of the areas, he said the authority had failed in the provision of the announced relief goods. The opposition leader called for the constitution of committees comprising of the District Coordination Officers (DCOs) of the concerned districts and members of the provincial assembly to probe the alleged irregularities. He also demanded of the government for directing the executive engineers of the Communication & Works Department for the immediate preparation of the PC-I of the bridges and roads washed away in the flood. Javed Abbassi of PML-N said that the country has faced severe devastations of the earthquake 2005 and flood 2010 that have wrecked the infrastructure in the province. He said that due to the failure of the authorities established at federal and provincial levels 6927 schemes have been abolished in the earthquake affected areas. He said that funds for those schemes were by the donor agencies, saying not initiating work on them has shake their confidence in the machinery of the country. He said that a number of schools were demolished to reconstruct it. But, they were never reconstructed and the ultimately result is the lukewarm response of the donors to the recent natural disaster. Anwar Khan, a PPP legislator from Dir Upper said that the floods had damaged water channels and now they are facing famine that multiplied the problems of the farmers. He called for immediate repairmen of the water channels to rehabilitate irrigational channels in the district. He further lamented illegal restrictions put on the transportation of fruit and vegetables from Dir to other parts of the country. Waqar Ahmad Khan of ANP said that like Dir Upper, District Swat also faces the irrigation problem, saying that neither water channels and nor electricity were restored to the district. Samiullah Alizai of PPP called for provision of free seed and fertilizers to farmers for the sowing of the wheat.
