*MINGORA: September 30 saw the initiation and completion of three innovative projects demonstrating cooperation between the government, civil society and the Army in Swat to solve people’s problems at the grassroots level.
At Islampur village, Swat District Coordination Officer Kamran Rehman inaugurated a water filtration plant, which would provide clean drinking water according to the World Health Organisation standards to 500 households.
The plant was provided by the Army while the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) built the room for installation of the plant and installed it with complete plumbing and sanitary fittings.
The area has a high incidence of waterborne diseases and the WHO had recommended the installation of a water filtration plant for clean drinking water. The community was also trained in maintenance of the plant.
Later the DCO visited the sanitation scheme among the projects undertaken by the community with the help of SRSP, which provided Rs334,000 for the project that would benefit about 350 households.
Speaking to the community members, the DCO said the provincial government had built the capacity of the SRSP to have a wide outreach in the province to help solve the problems of the community at the grassroots level.
He also asked the SRSP to assist the community in extending the project to the nearby villages.
SRSP Chairperson Munawwar Humayun urged the community to organise themselves and initiate work on self-help basis. A motorised chairlift was also inaugurated at Goljaba in Kabal tehsil by Maj Gen Ashfaque Nadeem Ahmad, GOC of the 37 Division. The chairlift would serve as an efficient and economic means of transportation and communication for Hazara, Guljaba and Ugde villages with Mingora city.
The chairlift, which would carry six people at a time on each side, was completed by the SRSP engineers and the community in a short span of 31 days. Addressing the community, Maj Gen Ashfaque Nadeem said the contribution of the SRSP to the development of Swat in the last one and a half years was being highly appreciated
SRSP Chief Executive Officer Masoodul Mulk thanked the donors including Citibank Foundation, Mother Help Page Worldwide and ICCO for funding the Rs1.1 million worth project. He said the SRSP would have not been able to work in these remote parts without the support of the provincial government. He urged the community to sustain the projects through a well-managed system, which had its base in the community.
The community leaders paid tributes to the Army for maintenance of peace and creating an environment in which development activities could take place. In the third function held at Mahodhand village in Shahdheri Union Council in Kabal tehsil, the SRSP inaugurated work on a 20-kilowatt micro-hydro project that would supply electricity to 60 households.
The villagers said only a few households had electricity facility in the village, which has an abundant supply of water to run the micro-hydro unit. The SRSP would provide Rs1.8 million for the project to be funded by Citibank Foundation and ICCO. The organisation would also provide support to women groups to reduce their workloads through provision of butter churners.
