KABUL(PAN): Japan on Thursday pledged providing $50 million to the Afghan government for strengthening security and efforts at national reconciliation.
In this regard, an agreement was reached between Foreign Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal and Japanese Ambassador to Afghanistan, Shigeyuki Hiroki in Kabul.
Talking to journalists after signing the agreement, Zakhilwal said the money would be spend on strengthening peace and the Afghan-led national reconciliation programme in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
President Hamid Karzai has recently taken several steps to bring peace and stability to the country and has repeatedly called on the Taliban and other militant groups to shun violence and joint the reconciliation process.
Also present at the conference was presidential security advisor, Muhammad Masoom Stanikzai, who said the Japanese assistance would go to the reconciliation monetary fund. He added the US, the UK, Germany and the UAE had already promised financial support to the national reconciliation programme.
Stanikzai said members of the High Council for Peace would soon be appointed.
He said after the completion of the high council, every national agency working for peace in the country, would come under its umbrella.
A commission called National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) aimed at bringing Taliban and other anti-government fighters back to a normal life has been operating across the country.
Hiroki hoped the assistance would have positive impact on the peace process in Afghanistan. He reassured his country's continued assistance to Afghanistan.
Japanhad pledged $ 5 billion to Afghanistan in coming five years.
