KABUL (PAN): The Ministry of Education has received 41.6 million newly published textbooks, costing $19 million, for delivery to primary and middle schools, the education minister said on Tuesday.
The books in Pashto and Dari were published in accordance with the new academic syllabus for primary schools, Ghulam Farooq Wardak told reporters in Kabul. He said the books would be provided to schools in hot areas this year and in cold parts in 2011.
The new curriculum for primary schools was approved in 2008 and books were published and distributed last year. For middle schools, the syllabus was finalised in 2009 and books were published this year, explained the minister.
He said most of the new books were meant for middle schools and some of them published for primary schools in order to meet their demand.
Wardak assured the issue of shortage of textbooks would be resolved soon. He said 70 percent of the books were published in Indonesia and 30 percent in Afghanistan.
He said the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had provided $10 million and Denmark $9 million for the publication of the books.
He also hinted at revising the curriculum for students of 10th to 12th grades during the current year and new books would be published and distributed next year.
Wardak said 600 schools had been closed in 28 districts of 10 provinces due to security problems, depriving 300,000 children of education. But efforts are underway to reopen the schools. About 200 were reopened this year in different provinces.
According to the Ministry of Education, 7.5 million children are studying at 12,000 schools across the country.
