Businesses in general are not non profit organizations so they are not under any obligation to shut down their businesses and educate children instead. And unless anyone can take over the responsibility of educating these kids rather than having them work, I don't see any harm in children working in communities where they don't have the option of education, instead. At least they are not roaming the streets aimlessly and they are able to develop work ethics as well as the ability to earn an income. It's better than begging.
Maybe we should keep an eye on whether they are being treated wrongfully while at work or building unions to get them benefits or some level of rights but other than that, what is the harm??

When I see a child in Afghanistan, it breaks my heart because I know a good bunch of them will either die of diseases, explosions or become future suicide bombers. Unfortunately, that is their reality. Unless you can take over the responsibility of
Educating them, let them do something productive. Showering these kids with stuffed toys is not going to help their future, work and discipline, just might.

Baserka has a valid point. We are not living in an ideal world and thus have to make the best out of the circumstances. The kids that work esp in the third world countries at least engage in some productive activity and help their families as well.In many instances these kids are the sole breadwinners and if they are to be placed in schools , then what will they eat?Unless the government and NGOs are to provide them with the basic needs of life first.

The harm is that the childhood of those kids are taken away and negative effects on their growth.
You are right on many points and I agree it's also false to spoil the children like the west does.

Kids don't get spoiled because you are buying gifts for them but that is a subject for a different time and thread. It's just that under the circumstances that these children are left with, toys are not going to help them. Ask any of these children if they would like food in their bellies over toys and I am sure they would choose the food.
Toughpashtun, I also don't agree that education should be replaced with labor for a child or a grown up but these children don't have the option of education. So if you can't pay for their education and they are left with the option of roaming the streets, either begging or enjoying their childhood with empty stomachs, give them employment.
One has to think practically and pick the option that gives fast results. When you are suffering from poverty, your innocence and childhood is unfortunately, already taken.

I never said that education should be replaced with labour.Rather I agree with you point of view that work/employment/labour for these children is a necessity because that way they can fulfill their most basic need i.e food.
Its a very sad situation actually . In Peshawar you'll come across kids as young as 5,6 years old doing chores such as collecting garbage which they then sell to earn a paltry sum of money to fill their stomachs and that of their households. In many cases the father is a drug addict and all the siblings are forced to go out and earn.
