  • Afghan Woman Named Best Actress in Asian World Film Festival ‎

Malalai Zikria, an Afghan actress and film maker, won the best actress award at the Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) for the hit Afghan drama, Utopia, in Los Angles.

Best Asian films were exhibited in the festival which was aimed at creating a bridge between Asian film makers and the world's biggest film industry of Hollywood.

‎Fifty countries from Asia, including Turkey, Japan and India - that release super-hit movies - took part in the festival.

Utopia, an Afghan drama directed by Hassan Nazer and produced by Malalai Zikria, has also been selected as the Afghan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards in the United States next year.

The producer and actress in the lead role, Malalai Zikria, said the movie was filmed in Afghanistan, India and Scotland.

Meanwhile, judges who selected the film as a foreign language entry, say they chose it because of its high standard and that it met international criteria.

Utopia already has a string of nominations for other awards and has already brought home some titles.

May I live long enough to watch an afghan write a book or produce a movie that has to do with things other than violence, oppression and war.

Khostai, for as long as a person lives, nothing has ended for him or her. Life is a continuation and nothing is final or absolute. Half of the battle is won inside one's head. If your heart tells your head that there is "no point", your head will not tell your body to move on forward towards a goal in life.

If you want to see the world become a better place, you have to bear heartache as if it was a price that you are not afraid but proud of paying a thousand times and more, if necessary.

Some people are addicted to pity. Sometimes I almost avoid telling people that I am an afghan. Not because I am ashamed of it or anything but because they look at you as if you were a dying puppy with its brains plastered across the sidewalk. There is so much more to a person than that. Find a beggar in Afghanistan and make a movie about what makes him happy and explore that topic only. An individual is defined by so much more in their life than just circumstances that happen to be a fact of their daily lives.
