  • Pakistan:2nd Fastest Growing Country in Research Output :SJR

Pakistan with the increase of more than 320% will rank only 2nd to Iran in Growth rate of research output.

Pakistan Research output will increase from only 7032 publications to more than 29,000 thousand by 2018.

    Original Source

Pakistan is expected to have second highest increase in research output ranking in the world, increasing from its current position of 43 to 27 in 2018. An encouraging news for higher education sector in Pakistan, the ranking is announced by the Scopus, world’s largest abstract, citation database of research literature and analytical tool similar to Web of Science (Impact Factor).

The Scopus initiated a forecasting exercise on predicting in April 2011 under the topic, “How World Scientific Output will be in 2018”. According to the results of this mega exercise based on the research output from 2003-2010, Pakistan is expected to have the second highest increase in research output ranking in the world.

Commenting on this development, HEC Executive Director Professor Dr. Sohail H. Naqvi said this ranking recognises the tremendous growth in research in higher education sector of Pakistan over the past ten years and it also predicts the a bright future for research in Pakistan.” The HEC has accomplished more in nine years since its establishment than was achieved in the first 55 years of Pakistan’s existence. Recently, six Pakistani universities have been ranked among the top 300 Asian universities.

Research output has grown eight-folds since 2002 (from 815 in 2002 to 6,200 in 2011). Around 80 per cent of these research publications from Pakistan are coming from higher education institutions. Output has more than doubled just in the last 3 years and is expected to double again in the next 3 years.

More than 5,000 Pakistani scholars have been facilitated to present their research work in leading conferences of the world. The HEC Video Conference Network is established in all public sector universities by covering 31 cities. The network is recognised one of the mega interactive network by having total 79 purpose built e-classroom based videoconference set-up.

Access to 140 plus free software provided to over 1 million students in higher education sector and there has been more than 80,000 downloads from 68 universities during 2011-12. During 2011-12, a total of 447 accredited lectures/ lecture series have been conducted by both Local and Foreign Speakers under the Virtual Education Programme, totalling to 1,043 lectures since commencement of programme.

The academic circles have termed the Scopus ranking as great success and honour for the county in particular and higher education sector in general. They believe that if the continuous support may be given to this sector and the faculty continues their work with same zeal and vigour, Pakistani higher education sector can win more laurels for the country.

    Old But Worth Posting

An international forecast for research output has shown that Pakistan will be among top 30 countries of the world in research by 2018. Scimago, an independent research organisation and an international evaluation and ranking platform, has projected in its recent publication how the world will perform in research by 2018 based on their past performance. The top 50 countries are included in the forecast.

China becomes the number one country in the world by 2018 in terms of research output; however three countries, which stand out and show the most drastic increase in numbers and rankings are Iran, Malaysia and Pakistan. Iran moves ahead from number 19 to number 4, Malaysia from 30 to 13, and Pakistan from 43 to 27. The expected output of research in Pakistan moving up 16 notches, which is the second highest increase world-wide, is primarily due to the innovative higher education policies and reforms taking place in Pakistan under the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

During the last few years, in addition to quality reforms, there has been a strong resurgence of research and innovation. In particular, there is a significant growth in the number of PhDs awarded out of Pakistani universities. The numbers speak for themselves. In the first 55 years since Pakistan's independence, a total of 3281 PhDs were awarded at Pakistani universities. However, since the establishment of the HEC in 2002, over 4000 PhDs have been awarded to-date, which is more than what was awarded in the previous 55 years.

There is a renewed focus on engineering and technology, agriculture, biological sciences, business education and social sciences, which are relevant subjects important for the socio-economic development of Pakistan. There is a zero tolerance policy on plagiarism, where every research paper, thesis and dissertation must be scrutinised by anti-plagiarism software before submission. All thesis and dissertation must be evaluated by at least two foreign referees in academically advanced countries in the relevant area of research.

Despite having very limited funds, HEC supports many research initiatives through different types of grants, including split PhDs, post-doctoral fellowships, foreign faculty programmes, hosting conferences and to present papers anywhere in the world, to name only a few. It is primarily due to this new flourishing research culture at the higher education institutions that the number of international research publications with impact factor has increased drastically.

While 816 impact factor papers were published in 2002, it has now increased to over 6300 in 2011, with the largest numbers of publications in areas of relevance to economic development. And at the rate Pakistanis are publishing their research papers, Scimago forecasts that by 2018, the research output will exceed 29,661.

While no university was ranked in the top universities of the world three years back, according to the most recent QS Asian Universities Rankings 2012, there are now six Pakistani universities that are ranked among the top 300 universities. Similarly, according to QS World Universities Ranking 2011, two Pakistani universities are ranked among the top 300 technology universities of the world. This is another achievement and recognition that has been widely acknowledged.

We should also thank Imran khan for his educational Reforms in Pakistan

A rough comparision of Punjab and KPK Educational Budget allocation.

I am looking for the day when KPK will have the highest literacy rate in Pakistan and I am damn sure under PTI this is more than possible

Don't get your panties wet, this is all because they have a big population and because pakistan has one of the biggest labour forces in asia and 100 years of british colonial rule in the area.

What i want Pakistan to do is, to stop funding terrorism in Afghanistan and Bombing Pashtuns in Kunar and Waziristan, then we can see peace.

Partially i agree about the population factor but 330% growth rate was never possible without the vision of HEC created by Dr Atta ur rehman.

Asad Umar PTI,Pervez hoodbhoy and Dr Atta ur rehman are the people i respect the most in Pakistan

Most of the Pakistan's research output is substandard. Much is done during Ph. D. or graduate studies. Moreover, one should make comparison on the basis of some comparable factor e.g. research papers and patents filed etc. per million of population.

It is ridiculous comparing raw figures albeit for the naive ones.
