India to resume Medical Missions in Afghanistan

Kabul: India is set to resume its medical missions in Afghanistan after a fresh reassurance about the safety of its nationals in that country.

"There is no scaling back. We are in the process of resuming full-fledged operations in Afghanistan," said official sources after wide-ranging talks between India's External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday night.

The medical missions, comprising teams of doctors, in Kabul and Kandahar are expected to resume full-fledged operations soon.

India was operating five medical missions in Kabul, Herat, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-e-Sharif.

The medical mission at Mazar-e-Sharif is functioning normally. After a coordinated attack killed nine Indians in Kabul on February 26, India decided to temporarily suspend the other four missions for security reasons.

Afghan peace process to shun Taliban with Al-Qaeda links

In his discussions with Karzai, Krishna reiterated India's full support for the ongoing efforts aimed at peace, stability and development in Afghanistan. The meeting, lasting 45 minutes, was very useful and cordial, said external affairs ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash.

The move to reopen medical missions, which have treated 300,000 Afghans over the years and earned huge goodwill for India, comes after a fresh assurance from the Afghan government that it would take all possible steps to ensure the safety and security of Indians engaged in development work.

During his meeting with Krishna, Afghan National Security Adviser Rangin Dadfar Spanta assured him that Kabul would take all possible steps to ensure the security of "Indian guests", and lauded India for its contribution to capacity building and reconstruction in that country.

The decision to reopen medical missions come at a time when Pakistan has scaled up efforts to influence power-sharing negotiations in Afghanistan.

Krishna arrived in Kabul on Monday night on a two-day visit to attend a crucial international conference on the future of Afghanistan. The conference is being attended by foreign ministers and representatives of over 60 countries and international organisations.

At the Kabul conference on Tuesday, Krishna is expected to convey India's concerns about the proposed reintegration of the Taliban, a contentious proposal of luring low-level Taliban operatives with cash and job incentives that was endorsed by the London conference on Afghanistan six months ago.

India is putting all these efforts, not the please Afghan but to piss the Pakis across the border off.
An independent and experienced Afghan diplomat wouldn't let any of those two countries to announce any aid (even if there is aid being awarded). Because, the main focus of announcing the aid is to show the world that we run the game here, Pakistan can go kill itself. And this leads to Pakistan getting pissed and tricking an Afghan or two into driving a car full of explosives into the Indian embassy. To the hell with this kind of aid that's going to produce hundreds and thousands of casualties as a result of collateral damage.
They should put a halt to any Pakistani or Indian aid, and create specific criteria for how they announce their aid towards Afghanistan. OR do what Shah shujah just realized ( to control of the aid distribution)

Aids via hospitals or schools hardly remain a secret. What you are saying could be implemented if we could make on umbrella agency and all aids and funds go through it and the agency is the only front that the world would know of.

But it doesnt work that way. International announcements and agreements are hardly ever press-free. And it would be childish of India to use announcements to 'piss' Pakistan off. As if Pakistan would be unaware of the work India is doing in Afghanistan. Being its immediate neighbor, Pakistan would know of any Indian presence in Afghanistan.

And the argument of refusing aid from a friendly country just because your neighbor to the east cant swallow it, is hardly sane. Thats like saying " We need your help but cant use it since our more powerful neighbor wont like that!"

Oh I think we can survive without the India/Pakistani aid being given to us. And, even if they do help, do you really think it's going to make any difference? After it goes through our khetawar mashran?
If acquiring aid from Pakistan/India is going to cost us all this war casualties, we might just not take the aid instead. There is plenty of aid, we need honest leadership to really spend it. Because, the money they announce on TV is no where to be seen anywhere in Afghanistan.

Two reasons why India and Pak's help is better - Proximity and cost. Providing help (I hate the word aid) is also a cost/benefit analysis. For India and Pakistan providing X amount of help to Afghanistan turns out to be cheaper and easier than most other countries.

But I get your point. No use any help when it leads to more conflicts. Personally, I dont want to see either country using Afghan soil to settle scores. Afghans and indeed Indians and Pakistanis would be better off without that.

Well I didnt want to say that to maintain a neutral stance. As people are fast to label you.

To add to your point, India definitely has interests in Afghanistan that go beyond simply providing help. It wants Afghanistan as a friend and free of Taliban.

Why, is there a UN law that stipulates that?

See I can come up with one-liners as well.

Dont thank me AL. I hardly have anything to do with it. Though I do pay me taxes, its GoI and the doctors and engineers who brave security threats that deserve the accolades.

It doesn't matter, I don't hate Indian Panjabis. Indians are more sincere than Pukis, and there are thousands of them working in mycountry, they do much better, to a higher standard and efficiency than terrorist Pukiz.
