  • Afghan products welcomed in New Delhi show

KABUL (PAN): Visitors have been taking a keen interest in Afghan products showcased at an international exhibition “Doing Business with Afghanistan” that began in New Delhi on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul said.
Jointly organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) and Afghanistan Chamber and Commerce and Industries (ACCI), the show was inaugurated by Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Afghan Finance Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal earlier in the day.
As many as 35 Afghan firms, taking part in the exhibition, have put on display products made in Afghanistan like carpets, hand-made goods, dried fruits, herbal medicines, Saffron and others.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Afghanistan’s products were warmly welcomed by visitors in New Delhi.
The “Doing Business with Afghanistan” is aimed at luring investment in the war-torn country. Senior Indian and Afghan officials and 250 businessmen representing 19 countries attended the inauguration ceremony.
Khurshid assured India’s $2 billion humanitarian aid pledge to Afghanistan was just the beginning of a process to reach out to the provinces and districts of the war-torn country.
Zakhilwal asserted his country would continue to remain stable beyond the US troop drawdown in 2014.
Khurshid urged Indian industrialists to grab the opportunities in the war-ravaged nation, currently going through a reconstruction process.

Afghan handicrafts dry fruits lure retailers at Delhi IITF

Handicrafts and several other items made by women from Afghanistan lured retail buyers at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2010 here over the weekend. Traditional clothes and silver jewellery were displayed, while some other traders brought dry fruits, fresh fruits, carpets and spices.

"I know how to address the Indians, I know how to give information about our products and about our country so that they buy our products," said Ayesha, woman participant from Afghanistan. Afghan trader Wali Mohammad Omarkhil said he would like to strengthen the relationship between India and his country through trade.

"We are expecting alot from the India International Trade Fair. We would like to find a good market for our products. Our aim is to make friendship with the Indian people, to introduce our products to the Indian people. We can provide them with the products," said Omarkhil.

Omarkhil further said that the heavy duties imposed on dry fruits and other items discourages traders from getting their consignments into India. This is the 30th edition of the IITF. The estimated budget of this event expo is expected to be a billion dollars. Around 23 countries are participating in the event.
