Onions from Afghanistan arrive to help contain prices

CHANDIGARH: With onion prices continuing to remain high, Punjab based traders have started importing it from Afghanistan through Attari-Wagah land route in Amritsar. While 400 tonnes of onion came from Afghanistan on Thursday, traders said about 2,000 more tonnes of the vegetable will come in from that country in the next 7-10 days.

"Considering the severe shortage of onion in the country which pushed up the prices quite high, we decided to import onion from Afghanistan. A consignment of 350-400 tonne of onion has already been imported and we expect 1,500-2,000 tonne of onion to flow into India from there through Attari-Wagah land route," Amritsar Exports Chamber of Commerce, president, Rajdeep Uppal said over phone.

As many as 10 traders from Punjab and Delhi imported onion from Kabul, traders said. Earlier, Amritsar based traders had tried to import onion from neighbouring country Pakistan.

They had even asked their counterparts in Pakistan to seek permission for onion export to India through Attari-Wagah land route in a bid to enhance bulb's supply. But that could not materialize, traders said. The imported onion from Afghanistan would be sold in the markets of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and even Delhi, traders said.

"Though the crop imported from Afghanistan is not superior to our crop. But its supply will certainly bring down the onion prices in the markets," said Uppal. Retail prices of onion are ruling at Rs 70 per kg in Punjab and Chandigarh.

India last imported onions from Pakistan in January, 2011 when it faced massive shortage of supplies.

Great news. This way Afghanistan will earn more foreign exchange and will motivate the local farmers to cultivate more crops and this way agriculture sector will be revolutionized and people instead of terrorist camps will work in fields.

Better economy is the most effective tool to counter terrorism and extremism.

            i love onions!
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

It is the government s responsibility to protect the economic interests of the state.

The demand and supply for food in Afghanistan is not balanced because cultivation of food is labor intensive and thus too expensive. Therefor people know that cultivating crops doesnt provide stable income. They are forced to do other jobs in order to feed themselves.

The prices for local products are high because we dont produce enough of it due to difficulties mentioned above.

China and other neighboring countries have more efficient and industrial agriculture. They produce food at much lower rate and export them to Afghanistan.

The cheap imported food in Afghanistan further damage food prices for local farmers.

Those who are able to export onions to India are a rare exception.

The solution is to have a government that subsidizes food producing farmers. This will create more stable economy and allow us to have food security.

But since the government is relying on snakes and scorpions like Ashraf Ghani and Ahadi for it economic policies we are unable to do anything.

They want us to have a so called free market so liberal that even make America look like a communist country.

how can Afghanistan have a free market and open to take over by multinational companies when the economey is gutter low?

they want to push Afghanistan into globalised market where bigger companies from else where can easily take over from Afghan companies.

since these multi nationals have more more than the whole GDP of Afghanistan , they can easily buy off whole fo Afghanistan.
many of natural resources hvae been taken over by indian, chinese, americans, while many rebuildign contracts have been given to pakistan, india, iran etc.

obviously there is alot of money generated inside of Afghanistan and shipped out. Thats why im wondering why Afghanistan needs to satisfy the market of a pisspool called india when they themselves lack.

and if china is mass producing ,why is india not importing from them?

Export rates are higher then domestic market rate. Indians supporting afghan farmers by purchasing on above afghan market rate. Greater the demand more will be supply and which will increase the prices. .so more returns for afghan farmers. .
lol.how come India destroying economy of Afghanistan ?

your explanation is correct but the reality is that some produce that go to Pakistan and india are sold for less than what they are sold for in afghansitan. I saw that in Kabul, Afghan cantaloupes were sold for 150 afghanis, and in peshwar the same afghan cantaloupes were for 75 rupees.
I could not figure out why that was since free market would dictate that the price should be higher in Peshawar and those cantaloupes are grown in the Kabul region.
