  • US Auto Giant Chevrolet Invests $50 Million in Kabul

US automobile company Chevrolet announced on Tuesday that it has invested $50 million into expanding its presence in the automotive markets of Kabul and Dubai.

Although, Japanese car maker Toyota currently dominates the Afghan auto market, officials of Chevrolet's branch office in Afghanistan have said that they closely studied the market before making the investments and are confident that by offering good quality cars and the best "after sales service," it would be able to make a place for itself in the auto market of Afghanistan.

The officials said that the cars they are bringing to Afghanistan are equipped with modern technology, with capabilities that will meet the specific needs of consumers.

"The cars will have a warranty of three years. We will be sending our employees to Dubai for training so that they can provide better services to our valued customers," added Sher Saeedi, head of Chevrolet's branch in Kabul city.

Chevrolet officials said that if demand for their cars is high, the company plans to invest more into its presence in the Afghan market.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Those are not real Chevys. They are Korean Cars formerly known as daewoo. Very poor quality. The automotive division was sold to the Americans. Now they sell cheap cars designed for third world countries.

Real chevys are not suitable for Afghanistan. They are too expensive thirsty for gas.

I rather see more Japanese brands than Koreans.

An investment is great news for Afghanistan. Hopefully more European, American, and Asian firms continue to invest in Afghanistan.

I wouldn't really consider that an investment as they will be only exporting vehicles to Afghanistan. What will be happening is that the money will be leaving our country, not the other way around.

Local Afghans will be employed, to me that is an investment, no?

I understand your position. But we have to understand that most of such investments harm our economy more than it benefits our people - in the long-run I should say.

It is also a fact that we have no other option but to import all our vehicles. Whether it is Chevrolet or Toyota wouldn't make much of a difference at the end.

Is there any Muslim or Islamist or Taliban car available which can better perform than the chevys? In the whole so called Muslim world there is not a single country who can manufacture a car on their own!

You are busy the whole day telling people usoolo salasa, shirk, tawheed, zandeeq, raafidi, shia, then how people like you can dedicate time to compete infidels in their technology.

Beggars are not choosers. Thank them that at least they take the risk of investment in Afghanistan.

I understand, and agree with your stance -- don't get me wrong. Ideally, I want to see Afghans building their own cars, but for now, war-torn Afghanistan should aim for providing jobs for its youth and this news does just that.

                  Best,

how is this a good news? along with the Golden sachs owning Afghan gold mines/reserves?

this could be a good news if you are a patriotic Afghan american.

i think they shouldnt get a single deal in Afghanistan and neither should these multinationals get a foothold in the country.

Afghanistan should make business with friendly nations not those who killed their people and pissed on their dead bodies.

Lets see how its good... the car will be driven on roads built by Afghans, cars will be fixed by Afghan mechanics by buying parts from stores run by Afghans, driven by Afghan drivers, filled in pumps owned and operated by afghans. The bad? Taliban will find ways to abuse them.
