    Four Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Developmental
    Projects worth Rs 1.5 billion

    ================================================== ===

President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday performed ground breaking ceremony of four development projects worth more than Rs 1.5 billion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province aimed at bringing progress and prosperity for the people of the province.

The President unveiled the plaques of the projects as he arrived in the recently renamed province on a one-day visit.
Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Senator Raza Rabbani accompanied the President, while Governor and chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also present on the occasion.

The projects inaugurated by the President Asif Ali Zardari are included extension of Peshawar Ring road (southern bypass), dualization of Peshawar-Warsak Road, reconstruction of 21 destroyed schools in Swat and construction of a 60-bed burn and trauma centre, in Hayatabad, Peshawar.

The burn and trauma centre to be established in Hayatabad Medical Complex will be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 532.240 million within a period of 24 months through the Ministry of Labour and Manpower.

The up gradation and remodelling of Ring Road will be completed in three years with a total cost of Rs 303 million including the grant of $25 million from the United States ‘ Narcotics Affairs Section.

The dualization of Peshawar-Warsak Road will cost Rs 363.942 million, while the reconstruction of 21 schools in Swat will be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 320 million.

The President also gave away a cheque of Rs 30 million to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council. Vice Chairman, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council Ahmed Farooq Khattak received the cheque.

In his address to the tribal jirga, the President said every citizen has to play his role, as complacency has no place in such challenging times. He said the people of the province need to check that their neighbours were not illegal foreigners or were involved in unlawful activities so that they might not create problems for the locals.

He said, the people here have a better understanding of their surroundings, social customs and must work together to create a safe environment. He assured full support of the government in this regard. “We will not let anyone take even an inch of our land and will protect it at the cost of our lives, as we know how much sacrifices were rendered to get our liberation from the British,” he said. He said it was his vision that Pakistan emerges as a major world trade route and added the government was committed to achieve all these goals with the help of the people.

The President greeted the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for getting their true recognition and thanked Allah Almighty for bestowing the present government the honour of giving the province its new identity. He said the decision of the new name was the result of a consensus that reflected the political maturity of the people and the political party. Zardari said the government was facing several challenges but added that all these would be surmounted.

Malgariya, 1.5 billion kaaldare cannot compensate for all the economic deprivation of the past 60 years. The Pakistani state is in perpetual debt of Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh. Royalties of electricity, water, tobacco, marble, oil and gas mean that the Punjabi dominated elite of Pakistan have plundered the resources of Pakhtunkhwa.

yes but we wanted pakhtunkhwa not khyber. Because in da past it was called pashtunkhwa as ahmad shah baba called it.

A clever ploy. What other reason could be there? Aren't people of khyber pashtuns? why are they given special mention? To create division perhaps?

            something to think about.
thanks 4 saying tat, great minds think alike eh.

I might sound cynical here but yeah I think they did it on purpose.

why would they mention khyber in particular and not mention swat or mardan or other places?
I doubt you are not from pakhtunkhwa .

Here , in pakistan khyber pass is an emblem of pashtuns . It was a gateway of pashtun warriors.

Khyber is an emblem for all Pashtuns Sher Khan...hence dar e khyber, khyber zalmee, etc. Timbaktu has a point though.

I think it is gazillions time better than that North West ukhwa dekhwaa...I feel fortunate to witness the renaming in my lifetime.Bacha Khan wished that too but he could not live longer to see the day.
We as Pashtuns have deep historical attachments with Khyber. And it is true that Khyber signifies Pashtuns. Pashtunkhwa/Pakhtunkhwa is even better. And if hypenation would do the magic of passing it through the Pakistani Parliment, then why not? Afghnia was the best name in my personal opinion.
"O Pakhtuns!, Your house has fallen into ruin, let us rebuild it".
"I want to see my people educated and enlightened. A people with a vision and a strong sense of justice, who can carve out a future for themselves in harmony with nature".

Very simple! Pashtuns live in Khyber. Both sides of Khyber has Pashtuns. Pashtuns have been safegurding the Khyber Pass. Pashtun poets and writers have been eulogizing the Khyber mountains. We are proud of the fact that Khyber is associated with us.
Finally, it is usual norm to asssociate a particular geographical location with its inhabitants.
