India eyes deal on maiden Afghan steel plant
    By Pajhwok reporter May 31, 2013 - 17:15

KABUL (PAN): The Indian government plans negotiations with steel and mining firms on reaching a deal with Afghanistan to develop four iron ore blocks and set up a steel plant in central Bamyan province, a report said on Friday.

Ninety percent of the agreement had been finalised, the Times of India quoted unnamed sources as saying. The Afghan Iron and Steel Consortium (AIFSCO) sought soft financing from New Delhi, it added.

The government in Delhi prepares to meet shortly representatives of a Steel Authority of India (SAIL)-led consortium to clinch the contract for developing the iron ore blocks and setting up a steel plant in Hajigak.

Negotiators told the newspaper: "The first phase, which will involve prospecting and exploration, is likely to take about 18 months and will involve an investment of around $75-$80 million."

In the second phase, the consortium will build Afghanistan's first steel plant -- a project that has a gestation period of about a decade.

Afghanistan is believed to have enormous mineral resources worth id="mce_marker" trillion, with India seeking to gain access to the largely untapped sector.

Do you have any evidence of this claim?

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

They can first start off by cleaning those slums in Mumbai and maybe help thousands of jobless indians find a job that requires a degree. India is still very much a 3rd world country lol.

the article said this is an investment, so they are looking to make money off of this. this does not only help them economically but also politically.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

I have came across many threads in this forum where members are really interested in showing the poor of India. development works in India that took place in last 10 years after the 1991 policy of Liberalization, privatization and globalization.. We Indian know we have a lot of poverty and we have a long way to go. But we are developing and developing fast...high growth rate will definitely pull many people from poverty....and yes secular democratic India has every right to move globally for increasing its political clout.

Afghanistan appreciates the assistance from India, however, recognize that India too has interests, and it is two-way street. Nonetheless, India has been a major player, and all Afghans appreciate the role of Indians, especially when compared to its headache Pakistan.

What assistance? the assistance they gave masood/rabani while at the same time pak giving its support to hekmatyar to destroy Afghansitan. India had an equal part as Pakistan in destroying Afghanistan. You cant call one a saint and the other a headache, they are different sides of the same coin.

^ I think India is smart to be honest, especially this time. They are not directly supporting any group, they are mainly focusing on development of Afghanistan, I dont understand how is that a bad thing?
