  • Wind energy potential in Pakistan

Wind energy is another important area where Pakistan can benefit by exploiting it in efficient manner. This sector is getting worldwide attention with the development and availability of inexpensive technology that allows its easy conversion to useful energy. Recognizing the vast potential that wind energy offers, a number of initiatives in Public and private sector have been taken. Pakistan has 1000 Km long coastline, which could be utilized for installation of wind farms. There are regions in the mountainous areas of Pakistan, which has the potential for wind energy generation.

The Wind Map of Pakistan developed by National Renewable Energy Labs (USA) has identified that wind with good to excellent speeds is available in many parts of the country, establishing a total potential of about 340,000 MW. The Gharo – Keti Bandar Wind corridor, in the South of Pakistan, having an approximate potential of 50,000 MW in the most attractive to investors at this point due to good resource potential as well as its close proximity to major load centres and the National Grid.

Very cool hope that you won't face the same NIMBY protests that we do in the states.

There certainly is but who the hell is going to work on it. I always think about wind energy while I'm on sea view there is a lot of space around the beach and wind over there is 24/7 !!

‘45 wind projects of 3,200MW capacity nearing completion’

          By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Water and Power Ch Ahmed Mukhtar has said that 45 Wind Power Projects of around 3,200 megawatts (MW) capacity are under completion process, out of which some are ready for commercial operation.

Among them wind projects worth 106 MW are ready for commercial operation, while another 150 MW projects are under construction. The next year will see at least 10 more projects – an investment of over $2 billion, the minister said while addressing as chief guest in the launching ceremony of Commemorative Postal Stamp on inauguration of Pakistan’s first 50 MW wind energy project by Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC) on Wednesday.

He said that commencement of commercial operation of FFC Wind Farm Project is the beginning of exploiting the wind potential of renowned Gharo-Keti Bandar Wind Corridor- an ...

NIMBY = Not In My BackYard

For example, when you have a community that objects to having offshore wind turbines installed since it would ruin their view of the ocean. Very selfish and typical of many Americans unfortunately.

They have started producing these locally in Pakistan now, and with the electricity drop as it is expect a lot more of these.

It seems the solar radiation intensity is the highest around Queta, Chaman, Zhob, parts of adjoining Waziristan i.e. 6-6.5 Kilo-Watts per meter square per hour per day. That means if you install a solar panel of 1 meter square you are having electricity 6 to 7 hours which can be stored as well and utilized at night as well. The more square meters of solar panels you install, the more you generate electricity.

The adjoining areas of Afg e.g. Kandahar, etc. should also have strong solar radiation intensity...don't know whether any survey has been made there or not.

Khyber Pukhtunkhwa on the average seems to have 4-5.5 KW an hour/m^2/day.

I read somewhere that the wind turbines manufactured in India work at 3 meters per second unlike wind turbines manufactured elsewhere e.g US which operate on wind speed of 4 meters per second. The Indian turbines also have low transportation cost.

It seems there would be more investment in solar and wind energy because they have a short gestation period unlike hydro energy with long gestation period. Other options are bio-energy, thermal energy, etc.

in australia there have also been issues with a noise problem, from the wind farms. i found these articles whilst googling about that issue, for you.
