  • Egypt's referendum

Egypt's draft constitution has 63 pages and 236 articles on everything from individual rights, religion, and the role of the state. It's hard to read, harder to understand, but it's easy to see why it's causing such a storm.

And the people of Zagazig seem to take it seriously.

To try to take the political pulse outside the hothouse of the capital Cairo, we drove two hours north to this dusty town in the Nile Delta. It has a catchy name and a claim to fame - it's President Mohammed Morsi's hometown.

Our random survey starts in Martyrs' Square - its mini version of Cairo's Tahrir. Dark swirls of graffiti are daubed on walls flanking an unassuming roundabout. On one side stares the face of the town's first son to die in post-revolutionary violence, 19-year-old Mahmoud Suleiman, starkly painted in red and black. On the other, there are rude slogans cursing the Muslim Brotherhood which can't be printed here.

When I take out my microphone and a pocket-sized copy of the draft constitution, a car immediately swerves to the side of the street. A local businessman in a grey suit and tie rolls down his window and leans over, eager to talk.....

Egypt's draft constitution is hard to read and harder to understand - but it's easy to see why it's causing such a storm, writes the BBC's Lyse Doucet reports.

I sometimes feel the stance of secularists to be not dependable. You tell Islamists not to pick guns and do it politically. But then when they do it in a democratic way like this Egyptian referendum, you still are not letting it go through. Let people go to referendum and say no to it or yes to it.

Now the above lady has a balanced view.

the opponents of the brotherhood are sore losers. the brotherhood have been on the losing end of politics for 80 years so they know how to swallow their pride, these secularists legitimately lose in elections then still expect the winners to pander to their wishes but when that doesn't happen they start setting fire to brotherhood offices. yet these people are painted as the progressives.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Randolph, my paranoid guess is that the opposition is being supported and heavily backed with uneven press coverage and other manners by a particular agency. This is what happened in Iran when Mossadegh was winning support. Kermit Roosevelt paid whole crowed to generate faux opposition (confirmed by their own documentation). The supporters have had mass rallies that have outnumbered many many times, including in rural areas, the mubarakists and Baradei secularists. The press however is mentioning that briefly. CNN finally mentioned it in one passing sentence today.

The West wants democracy of their own choice. They dont care about whether it is democracy or dictatorship, the only thing that they care about is a govt of their choic and remotely controled by them.

You all forget that the results of the election was :
                    Morsi 51,7%
                    Ahmad Shafiq 48%

That means that you can't ignore almost half of the population of Egypt who are clearly secular minded. Its dum to think that by just a small precentage of difrence you can do what ever you want, thats not how democracy works, in democracy you must also take account whith minorities and respect there rights. Otherwise what is the point to have a democracy???

that's pretty much how democracy works in the western world. when a candidate and their party wins, they don't start appointing the losing party members to important posts. the secular parties act like they are owed something despite being on the losing end of the parliamentary elections, presidential elections, and referendum.
