Water scheme completed in Khyber Agency

A drinking water scheme has been completed with the financial assistance of the government of Japan in Bakara village in Khyber Agency. It would help in provision of potable water to the villagers. The scheme would mitigate the sufferings of the women and girls, who used to fetch water from far-flung areas.

Nawabzada Fazal Karim Afridi, the honorary consul-general of Japan in Peshawar, inaugurated the scheme at an informal ceremony. Tribal elders and locals of the area attended the function.

Mr Afridi read out a special message of ambassador of Japan to Pakistan Chihiro Atsumi. In his message, the ambassador expressed great pleasure over the completion and inauguration of the scheme for provision of safe drinking water at Bakara village.

Two tribal elders, Shakirullah Jan and Shah Wali Khan, expressed gratitude to the government of Japan and its people for financial assistance for the scheme. They attributed the timely completion of the scheme to the interest taken by Afridi.

In his speech, Afridi said people of the area lacked health and education facilities and electricity. He said the problems would be discussed with the government of Japan. He said the people of the agency had great respect for the government and people of Japan for financing the establishment of schools and drinking water schemes in the area. He said the tribesmen would continue playing their role in strengthening relations between Pakistan and Japan.

    Strife hits Bara development hard

Delicate security situation has badly impacted on uplift schemes in Bara, while development work is underway in Landi Kotal and Jamrud, said Additional Political Agent (APA) of Khyber Agency Shahid Khan on Thursday.

The APA told local journalists during a briefing that of the development projects approved for the agency, 50 percent were for Bara and Tirrah, 25 percent each for Landi Kotal and Jamrud.

He said work on 41 of 56 water schemes approved for the agency under Governor’s Special Development Package (GSDP) and Annual Development Programme (ADP) had begun. He said a total of 150 water schemes would be completed in Khyber Agency during the current year.

The APA said 35 new multimillion-rupee development schemes had been launched in the agency.

“We’ve launched more schemes (in Khyber) than any district of the NWFP,” he said.

He said certain technical problems had delayed Shelman water project’s launch and they would be sorted out soon. Shahid Khan said catchments areas had been preferred for development schemes.

He promised early start of work on Ali Masjid water scheme for Landi Kotal.

He said construction of Jabba Dam was in the pipeline and on completion, the project would ensure smooth water supply to Jamrud and nearby areas. He said the FATA Development Authority (FDA) was busy doing surveys and selecting sites for the construction of arid and small dams. The APA said Bara Dam’s construction was also under consideration but work on it was linked with improvement of law and order situation.

He said development schemes would not be launched in the areas where tribesmen, who didn’t cooperate with authorities. He said tribesmen, who had suffered huge losses during the 2007 flashfloods, would be properly compensated.

He said railway track in Khyber Agency would also be rehabilitated with the FDA’s help this year. He said funds for the purpose had already been released. Shahid Khan blamed shortage of funds for delay in construction of Landi Kotal Press Club. He said construction of a cadet college in Landikotal would begin after land acquisition.
