But let me let me add some insight to a every interesting concern you raised my dear khor, the relationship between money and happiness turns out to be complex. People with higher incomes today report higher levels of happiness than their poorer contemporaries. At the same time, people today are far richer than earlier generations, but they're not happier than those who came before them.
I agree with your perception, except that it's actually not true that the same things make us all happy. What makes a rich person happy is not always gonna be the same as what makes a poor person happy. What makes people in the village happy may not be the same as what makes people in the city happy.

Also, guley, I'm hesitant to accept your last comment as true (that people today are not happier than those who came before them). How do we/you know this? How do we/you know how happy or unhappy the people before us were?

EDIT: I misread your post! Gotcha. You didn't say that the same things make everyone happy, sorry about that.

Absolutely true that money, while it does not equal happiness, is a major factor in bringing a person much happiness.

The gratification of a person's hedonistic desires is a pre-requisite for happiness. What we have done is that we have elevated or falsely elevated the human to mire him in issues of irrelevance like theology while the bourgeoisie class sucks the blood out of him. There are other facets of a human's existence than hedonism, I agree, but there in no happiness either in religion or in altruism when you are not fed, clothed and housed.

Well we need money to live.
But I seen people in my village who don't have alot of money but they are happy.
Too much money is too much tension to be honest.

Its definitely not all there is to life, but if its not there it does seem like there's nothing much to life
i assure many people here in the west have come from poor families me included, i remember when my father had to work double shifts in two offices back in pishawar, i can also remember when we used to sleep on bare floors with out even a carpet in the cold of winter, money isn't needed for one to be happy but of course it helps if you have it

i am not sure if your a religious person but those who believe in Allah will always be happy no matter what situation there in, its hard to explain

[QUOTE=amna;57544]Is it true that money = happiness? I have been hearing how money buys everything, including love. How do you explain this? What do you think of it?

Money is not everything but a lot of things....as said in urdu paisa sab kuch nahi hai magar bohot kuch hai......a lot of happiness definitely depends on money..... why do we keep on upgrading ourselves in terms of qualification also? in order to get higher post and finally a pay hike....

Does being rich make you happy?

have you read the story of King Midas who touched everything and it turned into gold?????

basically when one doesnt have money its everything for them....not even relations mean anything to them...

when they have it enough then they dont give much importance to money...

its only after having more than enough money people realize that money isnt anything.......

the simple fact that human being are never content with what they have .... when u dont have money you want it the most than anything else even at the cost of relation sometimes....

when you have money than you feel that you can sacrifice all youhave for the relations that you have lost....

Money can buy a lot of things but not love.........

i have learned to be happy in any situation... i don't think more money necessarily means more happiness... u can say that money can bring financial stability to your life but as far as happiness... it won't guarantee that... there are many issues in a person's life that can not be solved with money... if money was the key to happiness then every rich person would live a happy perfect life...

remember this world is not supposed to be perfect... no one's life is supposed to be perfect... so money or no money there will always be imperfections and unhappinesses in one's life... from one source or another... today lack of money could be the source of one's problem... and tomorrow when money issue is solved some other life problem will be the source of imperfection in one's life...

the idea is to be content...

To be happy, one need to be satisfied, and how one gets satisfaction depends on his own personality, his sensitivity and his environment.
Money has some role but very less percentage.

Hmm, well, money is needed to lead a comfortable life and in Western world comfort usually equals happiness. Nowadays many couples fight, and even separate, because of economical issues and during that 'process' they don't think about their love a.k.a. happiness. So I do think money is needed to live your life the way you want it, but it's also important to be happy because happiness gives you a reason to live.

^ If you are talking about Afghans in, for example, really poor villages, then that's because they haven't seen more than that. They are raised in an area with only poor people where everyone survives with very less money. But as soon as those very same people start moving to big cities, you will see the difference in their circumstances. No wonder when people go on holidays in very poor areas are enjoying life so much because there, there is no stress of how to earn money, or when to pay your next bill, etcetera. But as soon as they get back home, their mood will change within a jiffy.

Coming from my experience. We were on welfare, food stamps, and other financial aid. Having not enough to take care of your own family sucked big time. Having the comfortable amount of money enough for a family leads to a good, comfortable, and less stressful life. Now......money is not an issue for us. Alhamdillulllah, we can afford our house which i dearly love, we can afford sufficient new cars, we have enough money for Zakiat, my parents can afford their Hajj, student tuitions, etc, it leads to a good life for us. And yes, we are more happy.

But sadly, many marriages are affected by the issue of money. Let it be not enough money or having too much wealth. The point is to have an amount that you are comfortable to live in.
