  • Nimroz Dam Contract Won

    Tajik Firm To Start Work
    On Nimroz Dam

The acting minister of water and energy signed an agreement with a Tajik
company for the construction of the first phase of Kamal Khan dam over
Helmand River in south-western Nimroz province.

The Tajik company, Tadas, was chosen as a result of open bidding that
was attended by eight local and international firms. The agreement was
signed between Minister Muhammad Ismail Khan and Tadas head, Noor Ali
    Niyazov.

Khan said the first phase of the project included construction of a 3,700
meter water reservoir and installation of three gates at the dam. The
project is estimated to cost almost $10 million to be provided by the
    Afghan government.

Work on the dam’s designs had been started some 50 years ago, but could
not be completed due to instability and war. Khan said Afghan engineers
would complete the design. Niyazov said the first phase would take a year
    to complete.

The dam would be completed in three phases at a cost of almost $100
million. The dam would have the capacity to irrigate 80 hectares of land,
besides producing 8.5 megawatts of electricity, according to Ismail Khan.
He did not say when the dam would be completed.
