  • Afghan trade vehicles remain stranded in Karachi

KABUL (PAN): Pakistan is refusing to allow thousands of Afghanistan-bound containers loaded with commercial goods to leave the port city of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, under the new transit trade agreement between the two countries, an official said on Thursday.
"If urgent steps in this regard are not taken, some goods may lose their value," Deputy Commerce and Industry Minister Ghulam Mohammad Yalafi told a press conference in Kabul.
The delay in implementing the Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) had left 3,000 Afghan trucks stranded in Karachi since May 22 of this year.
Though the historic pact went into effect on Tuesday when Afghanistan sent a two-truck convoy carrying trade goods on its way to India for the first time under the new agreement, Pakistan is still not allowing trucks to carry commercial goods into the landlocked country.
Yalfai said Pakistan failed to give any reason for the restriction. Though Pakistan earlier announced that the trade accord had gone into effect, the country was not prepared to implement it, he said.
The deputy commerce minister said the 3,000 trucks carried merchandise for factories, electronic equipment and food items, which he feared could turn rotten if not transported immediately.
The commerce ministry planned to send a delegation to Pakistan next week to discuss the issue with relevant officials, he said.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

i saw this article before i went to islamabad the other day and even on my way back, there were tones of these trucks on the road. i did hear a few things about the trucks being insured and torched by divers for that money though. they say, they empty the truck and then set it on fire and burn it and then blame it on taliban. sounds like too much work for me..

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

its not as simple and "evil-Pakistan-stopping-afghan-goods" as you all think.. 90% of these good aren't even bound for Afghanistan, 95% never reach Afghanistan..why ? because they are all smuggled right back into Pakistan before they even cross Torkham and that hurts the Pakistani economy. What do you think people mean when they say that this stuff is smuggled from Afghanistan ? it doesn't mean that this stuff actually came from Afghanistan rather that it was brought into Pakistan through karachi under the guise of getting it across border..This is a major concern since most of this smuggled stuff enters the northern markets where local economic conditions are already fragile

Also what this unbiased report missed out in is the fact that Afghan traders haven't paid the required transit and security fees which are obligatory before the merchandise can get moved out of the port
It's enough that I know, Our time had a home, In your heart..Was a place..But the glass always breaks..

Also Pakistani authorities did allow them a window of 60 days to make payments during which these goods were allowed to leave port but there was no compliance from the Afghan authorities regarding this matter
