KABUL (PAN): The Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled and the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched on Thursday a new project to improve labour laws and administration in Afghanistan.
Funded by the US Department of Labour, the three-year project seeks to review Afghanistan’s labour laws and regulations with the aim of creating a legal framework that supports the promotion of productivity and workers’ rights.
Another objective is to review, reform and strengthen the capacity of the ministry to provide services to workers and employers, with a special focus on improving labour law application, the UN agency said.
"The project will contribute to build a modern system of labour administration strengthening our capacity to provide services to workers," Minister of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled Amena Afzali said.
ILO Senior Coordinator and Representative for Afghanistan Herve Berger thanked the US for its support and said bringing decent work to Afghans was an important contribution to the country's stability.
Afghanistan's 2007 Labour Code did not appear to provide comprehensive protection in line with the ILO's core international labour standards, the UN agency said.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
