  • Academy to be set up to polish artists’ skills: Iftikhar

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtun-khwa Minister for Culture and Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain has said that a state-of-the-art academy will be set up in the provincial capital to polish skills of the artists and to promote cultural activities.

“In the coming budget sufficient amount will be allocated for the promotion and welfare of artistes and artisans. Another hall will be constructed near Nishtar Hall as culture and artistes are asset to this province and providing them better environment is the government’s responsibility,” he said while speaking at a function held in honour of famous Pashto singer Gulzar Alam.

The programme, ‘An Evening with Gulzar Alam’, was arranged by the Culture Committee of the Peshawar Press Club in collaboration with the Culture Department and Tourism Corporation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday night.

The minister lauded the services of artistes including Gulzar Alam who kept culture alive even in unfavourable conditions and threats and militancy. Singers like Gulzar played vital role in creating awareness and promoting nationalism and progressive thoughts, he added.

Mian Iftikhar said Gulzar had launched his career in Pashto singing at a time when no other singer could dare utter a word of the progressive and revolutionary Pashto poets like Rahmat Shah Sail, Ajmal Khattak, Ghani Khan, Qalandar Momand and a few others.

“He selected those pieces of poetry, which described poverty, suppression, exploitation and social injustice with the common and downtrodden people,” he said.

The minister said many artistes had left their motherland or the profession due to threats, but the present government not only revived cultural activities and encouraged artistes but also controlled militancy to a great extent. He gave away a cheque for Rs500,000 to Gulzar and said other deserving artistes would be extended help.

Literati and senior artistes including Dr Rajwali Shah Khattak, Dr Fazle Rahim Marwat, Dr Muhammad Azam Azam, Abaseen Yusufzai, Shaukat Ali, Rahmat Shah Sail, Ismail Shahid, Said Rahman Shino and Gulraiz Tabbasum also lauded the services of Gulzar Alam for the Pashto language.

They said Gulzar introduced new trends in singing and sang Pashto ghazal and poems with a modern touch. He sang revolutionary poems of writers like Rahmat Shah Sail, Ghani Khan and Ajmal Khattak at a time when there was a ban on such pieces of poetry, especially during Ziaul Haq’s military regime.

Provincial Minister for Education Sardar Hussain Babak, Provincial Minister for Sports and Tourism Syed Aqil Shah, Provincial Minister for Information Technology Ayub Ashari and ANP leaders were among the guests present on the occasion.

Cultural Journalists Forum Oresident Ihtisham Toru and General Secretary Rokhan Yusufzai also spoke and thanked the government and participants. The function was followed by a concert in which Fayyaz Kheshgi, Gulzar Alam, Shaukat Mahmood, Ibrahim Mohmand and Azra Iqbal entertained the audience.
