Two-day Pashto conference set to kick off today

PESHAWAR: The two-day World Pashto Congress will start from today (Friday) with 700 delegates from all over the world gathering to discuss the raging conflict on Pashtoon’s soil both in Pakistan and Afghanistan, organisers said on Thursday.
“Theme of the congress this year is peace and the delegates will discuss it from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) perspective,” Nisar Advocate, a member of the organising committee for the biggest gathering of Pakhtun intellectuals and poets, told Daily Times. KP Chief Minister, Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, will inaugurate the opening session as other key dignitaries will also join him at the inaugural session, while the congress will culminate at a cultural show late Saturday night, according to the scheduled programme for the gathering.
Peshawar is hosting such a big gathering after a long time, as militancy-wrecked provincial capital was almost a ‘no-go’ area for outsiders, as terrorists stepped up attacks. However, recent achievements against the terrorists enabled the government to allow holding of such programmes. “It is not purely a political conference but major political leaders will visit the congress,” Nisar Advocate said.
Pakistan People’s Party (Sherpao group) Central Chairman, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, and MNA Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti will attend the congress, while the delegates from Afghanistan are also expected to show up at the biggest gathering of Pakhtun intellectuals and poets, according to the organisers. However, it is not clear whether the Afghan govt will be represented at the congress. The KP government spokesman, Mian Iftikhar, pins hopes on the congress, saying the gathering of Pakhtun intellectuals and poets will prove “first step towards peace” in the region.
