Has the Hazrat Ali shrine always looked like that?
Or was it destroyed by war and rebuilt?

Hi Catya,

The Hazrat Ali Shrine Complex also known as the historical Blue Mosque was destroyed by Genghis Khan[Mongol invasion] in the invasion around 1220. However, the Seljuq dynasty sultan Ahmed Sanjar rebuilt the first shrine at this location. Seljuk sultan Sanjar erected a shrine on this site in 1136. Timurid sultan Husain Baiqara (1469-1506) built the present shrine in 1480-81 (885 A.H.),furthering to the town's development into a large urban center. The shrine was restored extensively in the mid-twentieth century it draws Shi'a pilgrims throughout the year, and especially during the celebration of New Year.

What beautiful photos! oh my goodness, my heart aches to go back

What camera did you use?

Also, i loved sleeping on the roof.....it was the best thing

I know Mazar's weather was hot

[Catya Sher]

The shrine is so pretty!

Once I was trying to get to Mazar from Termez to see that and then my plan was to travel all the way to Peshawar across Afghanistan.

But I was warned there was too much fighting and reluctantly gave the plan up, right at the border. I looked across from that abominably named "Soviet-Afghan Friendship Bridge". This was well after the Red Army had departed the country.

At least now I am able to see the pretty shrine complex in detail from behind a computer...better late than never!
