  • What is life like in Afghanistan if you were to move there from a Western world?

For you guys living in the west who went to Afghanistan what was the experience like?

Could live there permanebtly after having lived in the west?

I imagine it might be difficult to adjust to life there. Specially if you have no family tied remained there.

self employment opportunities are great but i wouldn't move unless i had family ties. i am working on a project and if i see good results in a year or two, i am moving but not permanently since security is not too great.

I am not sure about Afghanistan, but I find life to be depressing in Pakistan, I use to enjoy a lot as a kid over there, playing with cousins etc... however as adults, there is so much depression there, that I wana get out Asap. Some times I feel sorry for my (khalas) over there, they got married to these strict mullah type husbands, and literally they spend all their lives inside their houses. when they were single. they were so much happier.

The depression part is also on the Afghan side, maybe even more, due to lack of future prospect of stability. Most want change but nobody knows how to bring change....

Afghanistan lacks behind in so much, like there is not one single thing that you can call ow that is ok or that is going in the right diretion...Development is almost 0, industry is non-excistent, educated population is really small you will barely come across one who is not a totaly delusional fool, the worst are the new to internet fanatics who belive in Iluminati and even lizard people, yes those are quite abundant in Afghanistan. Cultural norms have goten extremer, like the weding spendings and the price for a bride is ridiculous, what used to be as a small tradition of buying some clothes and juwerely for the bride, has grown to business where the bride family want to make some profit from all of it...And you will see also a lot of so called "mullah"who sell talismans or touwiz... like almost around every mosque....
No clean runing water, limited electricity, young men staring at women feet.. -_- so as a girl you would even need to wear shoes in the summer...
In most Pashtun areas even in cities women once turned older than 12 are forbiden to go outside, so from that age onward they stay at home and after that they will marry and stay for the rest of their lives as a working slave in the house of their husband, till they die.

God this sounds horribly depressing. Based on this description of yours I think one might be tempted to rather live in the wilderness of Alaska all alone than this "civilization" over there...

I can totally see now why Westerners look down on Eastern cultures. Its indeed are backwards. There is a need for mentality change in every facet of life over there if any progess is to be seen any time soon.

Yes its quite depressing, I wish it was diffrent but we first needs to face reality instead of living in a delusional world of thinking everything is fine, or will magicaly become better. Ofcourse some farsiban will claim that the north is somehow better, dont belive them, the mentality is the same and they have even some disguisting pedophile **** going on there what is even worse, under age girls being wed of to old men is quite common under heratis and people of mazar, the so called "civilized" persian centers....

Afghanistan had a mentality change in 70-80s, but it was stoped by the west and their slaves mudjahids, porkis and taliban. The ones who wanted change and modernity are dead or live in foreign lands.

The reason its depressing is because the elites steal all the wealth and the vast, vast majority of people are poor. When ever the poor rise to bring change, the Western corps. supplies the Elites with weapons to kill the poor.

life is depressing regardless of where you go if all you do is sit on your ass, whine and blame others for your laziness.

It depends on what you are looking for. It has its upside and downsides.
                      Upsides
                      Slower pace of life
                      Organic food
                      Cheap
                      Family oriented life
                      Few bills to pay
                      You can hear the adhan

                      Downsides
                      Lack of security
                      Lower standard of living
                      Slow pace of life
                      Lack of employment
Different mentality even if you have been brought up in an Afghan household

Life is good here if you got lots phool kaldars rapiyay, like all the born again shah maqsud tasbi rolling topak salars, taryakwals, despots, nepots, they are enjoying the fresh air picnics in shamali and along the restaurants in panjshir, the hills of mazar and in the baghona of kandahar. Life is a peach.

I think there is a bigger problem with the self. Once you have lived in the west, you have tasted the forbidden fruit, you have been seduced by Jennifer, you cannot take retrograde steps and forsake babylon for babylon flows in you because once you plant your roots in foreign land, you absorb its soil fluids. So what oft happens is you have one foot in Canada, you got hooked to Tim Hortons, and other foot in your hawali in kabul. You switch back and forth, between babylon and afghanistan, and your heart yearns for home but its the surrogate that gives you the comforts.

Rest all true. Lack of fully developed infrastructure civil organs medcare security as you may now be accustomed to in the west and take for granted. Plus you have to compete to live successsfuly with the existing afghans and you will struggle to keep up with their drive to survive. They are there against all odds that you may never experience.
