The Mzab are an Amazighi ("Berber") ethnic group from Algeria who along with the Omanis are the only followers of the Khariji tradition in Islam. Like the Omanis they are Ibadis.
They are the third main Amazighi ("Berber") ethinc group in Algeria, after the Kabyles and Shawi.
The Kabyle are often secular, Francophone and some have even converted to Christianity. Zidane is Kabyle.
The Shawi are comfortable with the Arabic language and the Shawi dominate the Algerian military leadership and thus politically. One of my former friends was a relative of one of the ex-presidents of Algeria, Lamine Zeroual (a Shawi).
Unfortunately there were some clashes and deaths there a few months ago as Mzab and Arab nomads fought each other.
