Ok so i was having an argument with my husband in regards to these castle looking homes in herat... we were looking at herat pictures in FB...he kept saying no its not photoshoped they exist, and i kept saying no... now looking at these pictures i realize that they do exist...

they are called "qalaa"... my mom used to talk about our grandad's qalaa in sarpoza kandahar, but i always wondered how afghan qalaas looked like... never thought it would look similar to the castles built in the west... or dipicted in movies...

wow just wow... amazing... so my grandad's qalaa could look like this?... hmmm interesting.

Yeah they exist, and there are tons of other castles in villages which once used to belong to Khans of that village but sadly most have been damaged.
Last year I visited one which was totally ruined but it was like 200 years old!!!

that Herat fort or qala e Ekhtairuddin is very old! some say its from the time of Alexander the great!

Yeah my family lives in a Qalaa back home, it's haunted too, pretty creepy. There was a battle around the castle during the British and Afghan war. It was also a military base, my ancestors owned it. We call the castle Qalagai, it's in Ningarhar. There is a section that nobody goes to because you get rocks thrown at you from thin air (it's haunted). It's really scary, but beautiful.

sure different from when i was there. i don't even recall a 2 story building.
amazing how quickly and dramatically, places can change.

Very beautiful and interesting city and region. Good to see that people are building and prosper more because Afghanistan has been hit hard with problems.

Especially the masjid al-jumʿa in Herat is beautiful.
