da ZahruJam, Karakoram is a mountain range probably the second largest after Hamalya...It is located in the north partly in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is extended over a length of about 500 miles into three countries; China, India, and Pakistan ... A part of the old silk road passes through it...
In this range, there live people who are called Dards...They spealk languages that are related e.g. Shina, etc. These are lovely people...simple and peaceful...I am very much attracted to their culture...
You can imagine that when you start in Badakshan and go east through Hindukush, you reach Karakoram at some point near Giligit and going farther east you come accross Hamalya. In Karakoram you have K2 the second highest peak in the world. In Hamalya, you have Mount Everst...the highest peak in the world.
In Karakoram you also find the largest non-polar glaciers like Siachin, Batora, etc.
When you start from Pekhawar and go up the Karakoram Highway, you first enter Hazara, then Swat, then Gilgit-Baltistan, and going farther north you reach Khunjrab, border of Pakistan-China...Beyond that is Sinkiang province of China (Kashaghar, Ormachi)...
toramana, have you looked through the photo gallery under karakoram, pakistan 2006, where it goes to lahore and into india to the golden temple?
dj, i really like that piece. i was going to compliment you on your writing, oh well.....
no faye, i haven't...i'll like to though....actually, i like these mountains in north very much...starting from Badakhshan, passing through Chitral, Dir, Swat, Hazara, and Kashmir with Gilgit-Baltistan to the north is beautiful area...i like it so much...
i thought it was the himalayas. i'll have to get my map out. same qualities though.
faye, Karakoram, Hamalya, and Hinduskush meet at some point in Gilgit-Baltistan...Hamalya probably, is the mother mountain range with the other two i.e. Karakoram and Hindukush having sprung from it...Therefore, topographically, they look alike....
i didn't have such a good time in pakistan, as a female travelling alone but i have heard many tales from male travellers who loved it in the north. the hospitality and the beauty of the place. i always wished i had been able to go there but i rushed through to lahore, by train then into india and stayed at the golden temple. so looking at those pictures reminded me of my journey.
