KABUL (PAN): The International Cricket Council has agreed to the appointment of an international coach for the Afghan team, the cricket board said on Tuesday.
Two Pakistanis, former captain Rashid Latif and Kabir Khan, served the team as coaches, but they resigned about two months ago. Both accused the Afghan Cricket Board (ACB) of not allowing them to impose their ideas on the team.
The board accepted their resignations after a tournament in Scotland last month. Afghanistan has since been without a foreign coach.
ACB chief selector, Dr. Hamid Shinwari, told Pajhwok Afghan News on Tuesday they had talked to ICC officials on the need for appointing a new foreign coach for Afghanistan a few days ago in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.
The ICC officials had accepted their demand and the vacancy would be announced soon, claimed Shinwari, who said the Afghan Cricket Board would appoint the coach after the post was announced and applications were received.
The official said the appointment would be on a short-term basis -- for the tour of Kenya. The team is expected to leave for Kenya one and a half month later for one-day international and Test matches.
"If our players are satisfied with the coach, he will be offered a long-term appointment," Shinwari explained. An eight-day training camp for the Kenya tour would be organised in Sharjah, he said.
A former coach, Taj Maluk, said he was ready to train the team. "I remained with them for the last eight years. I know the weaknesses and qualities of every player," he said.
