    Afghan swimming team formed

    KABUL (PAN): For the first time, an Afghan national swimming team was formed after a competition in this central capital city on Monday, sports officials said.
    Nearly 800 young men were distributed entry forms to participate in the contest, but only 300 granted permission, said deputy head of the swimming federation, Muhammad Sher Mehraban.
    The competition was conducted at the Tasadi Khanasazi swimming pool.
    The pool was divided into six sections. Each contester had to swim up to the end of the 32-metre long pool and return, the official said.
    Muhammad Imran, 23, who is a member of the Afghan National Army swimming team, got first position. He told Pajhwok Afghan News that he completed the task in 27 seconds.
    Swimming federation director, Eng. Mohammad Tawab, said the competition was planned by the Afghanistan Olympics Committee.
    He said the athletes were divided into groups and each group was consisted of six athletes. "Those who got first, second and third positions were selected as members of the national swimming team," he said.
    A total 30 top swimmers were selected for the national team, with 30 others for the youth's team and as many more as junior swimmers.
    Afghanistan's Olympics Committee director, Gen. Muhammad Zahir Aghbar, accused former heads of the swimming federation for misusing funds. He said no proper swimming pool had so far been constructed for swimming.

The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

    Forming teams in such a critical era is not healthy for the talented ones. Because thats what happened with the soccer team, the players that made it to the national team were a handful of Shamaliwal's that happened to be very close to NA, and that's why when they got to Europe half of them fled to seek asylum. The poor, majority and the real talented ones cannot benefit from this.
    Majority of the rural Afghanistan is under fire and majority cannot participate in such pleasure related competitions. And, I think it's not fair at all. Or either they should at least advertise properly, not a KABUL ONLY advertisement, as usual. Because there are millions of other Afghans that are extremely talented but under unfortunate reasons cannot leave their hometowns. Not to mention, they never hear about it....

            According to the report it seems like it was a pretty easy exam to determine and select of the national team,just going a single lap on a 32 meter long pool is very childish,,,no offense to selected team
            Afghans are total aliens to different type of swimming specially athletic,all they know is head up low/short endurance swimming with the lowest pace and momentum possible,it will take em time to advance,i guess i should apply to be their coach
