Major Afghan airlines offer free two way tickets to afghans willing to travel in order to support our team. Saw it live myself. I am not a big fan of the game but it's pleasing to see how well they are doing and how passionately other afghans watch it.

So the solution is to make Pashtuns in Afghanistan more Indic so they can feel closer to the Pashtuns living in Pakistan?

              cricket is a lovely game.
equating it to being desi is simply being closed minded.

It's a fact wrora. The way Desis are passionate about it is unbelievable-it's a given that all Desis have an obsession with it. Especially when India and Pakistan play. Imagine what the blue blooded white man thinks when he sees these two nations bickering about a game that was taught to both by his forefathers.

It's a game that only former British colonies keep alive. A game taught to the conquered people, which generally used to be played by the British upper classes.

Its not a manly game tbh...played IT once while I was in Pakistan... You dont get the same euphoria and feeling of manliness/alpha-ness when you win/dominate as you do in some other sports...Afghan kids should concentrate on football....there is Big money there...guys like Messi and Ronaldo make unbelievable amounts of money....I would like to see Afghanistan Play in the Fifa World Cup One Day....

You have some point regarding cricket and south asia...Its better if Afghanistan do not get cultural influence from South Asia...but keep being its own kinda thing...

But cricket is a sport very few people Play...only Desis are passionate about IT....i Dont know any British they are Crazy about football...the Premier League and all that.

its a sport and its good for the health.
afghanistan didnt get it through colonization.
if such is the case than almost everything has to do with one or another country.

Plenty of other sports are good for your health. The only reason Afghans play cricket is because it was presented to us on a platter by Pakistan/India - they train the teams and fund the game - and we, being a poor and identity-less people, accept their offering. In fact, cricket doesn't require as much athletic ability as other sports. That's probably why the players in the Afghan team are also overweight and not in shape.

It's also easier to do well in cricket compared to something like football/soccer which is much more competitive. The only countries that play cricket are some underdeveloped countries colonized by Britain (South Asia, South Africa) and Britain, AU, who don't even take it as seriously.

Cricket was introduced to Afghanistan by Pakistanis, and it's gotten extremely popular during this period of growing instability in Afghanistan. Pakistan has increasing political influence over Pakistan so it's only fitting that it culturally dominates the country as well.

Pashtun identity will be lost because of people like you who think culture is trivial. So what if Pashtuns watch Bollywood, so long as they're entertained? So what if Pashtuns wear Indian clothes, so long as they look good? So what if Pashtuns speak Urdu instead of Pashto, so long as they can communicate with each other? And so on...

Exactly... people need to know the history behind it. The irony is, like Britain introduced it to Pakistan, Pakistan introduced it to Afghanistan. Speaks volumes about who really is the culturally dominant force in that region.

Cricket is British invented sport, not Indic. Most modern sports including Football, Tennis, Rugby etc are all British invented.

Plenty of non Indic countries play cricket like Holland, Argentina etc as well.

An example of Indic sport is Kabbadi and even Iran plays it.

Whether we like it or not Afghanistan and the sub continent has had influence on each other throughout history and its normal.

No Shapur, it's British invented but definitely more popular in South Asia. Other countries may play cricket but not to the level that South Asian countries play, where it's their national sport and part of their traditional sports culture. Kabbadi is played in Iran but it dominate in other sports, and in Iran their is little other Indian influence anyway so it doesn't matter.

If Afghans are ok with subcontinent influences and assimilating into the larger Indian cultural sphere than that's fine. I'm just pointing out what will eventually happen if they continue to be passive and accepting of Pakistani/Indian cultural influences in their country. I find it pretty sad but what can I do I guess.

decades of war, illiteracy and imperialism/invasion by other countries have taken its toll on everything including the social and cultural fabric of our country.
