So the Englishman says it's about territory, the Irishwoman says it's about religion... lol

How do you expect to solve the problem if you can't even agree on what is the problem ?

I have a lot of other questions.

Why only the Northern part is occupied by the British ? Is there something special in the North which doesn't exist in the rest of Ireland ?

Are people exactly the same in the North and in the South ? I mean ethnically and about religious beliefs ? Do they speak Irish or English in the North ?

Do the majority of Irish people in Northern Ireland want to reunite with the South ? And in the South ?

Are Scottish people taller and stronger than the English ? If yes, then why were they dominated by the latter in the past ?

Are you able to distinguish a Scot from an Irish just from facial features ?

Are Irish people still religious or are they slowly becoming like English people ?

All of ireland was under british occupation which resulted in the war of indepdence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_War_of_Independence The British held onto the north because those in northern ireland were pro-british & Protestant and didnt want to split from the UK

                          • Thanks Adam, it clarified many things.

But the Irish War of Independance looks ridiculous with only a few hundred casualties on each side. They should have did it the Afghan or Russian way.

What's the difference between Great Britain and UK ?

                            • Great Britain means just the right island, so just England, Scotland and wales

UK refers to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island

Apart from the Scandinavians, the Northern European Celts were amongst the last large group of Europeans to be Christianised. After the Roman invasion of Britain (around say 50 BC), the rebellious Celtic tribes were pushed into Wales, Scotland, Brittany (Gauls), and some parts of the Germany/the Alps. The Celtic chiefs who occupied mainland Europe including Britain were made loyal to Rome and when Rome became Christian, these Celts became Christian first. Even when the Scottish Celts eventually left their pagan religions much later, their spirit of resistance meant that they were the first to go from Roman Catholicism (the dominant form of Christianity) to Protestanism.

It is these Protestants that eventually settled in Ireland, in the North. In summary thus, the religious split in N.I. comes from the natives (Celtic Irish Catholic) and the descendants of Celtic Scottish (Protestant) settlers. It is ironic, thus that the once-rebellious Scots who settled in Ireland should favour a strong alliance with London, given the Scottish history of resistance.

Both groups in N.I. have original Celtic/Gaelic histories, though by and large EIRE (Southern Ireland) has kept the language. It has been easier for them, being independent though the Gaelic language, pretty much dead in the rest of Europe where there were Celts is now fighting for survival there too.

Religion is a badge in N.I., though communities were forced to live apart. Even though both communities have a shared Celtic history, how they got to Ireland is different and they have heros based on their religious outlook. In the South more people are followers of Catholicism, but many 'escape' to London where the divorce/abortion laws are free and easy and remain there. Religious Poles and Lithuanians are the new addition to Southern Ireland, but even though they share Catholicism with the Irish, they can be marginalised for being from the outside.

On the point of 'different' features for the Scots - way too much mixing between European settlers and the Celts for any marked difference, although it is said that red/ginger hair, very pale skin and freckles are Celtic/Scottish features. The thing that effectively ended Scottish independence was the absorption of the Scottish kingdom into mainland Britain through the marriage of the English and Scottish royal families. There have been several claimants to the Scottish throne since 1700, including the African dictator, Idi Amin. There is currently a movement for Scottish independence that is likely to result in the separation of Scotland from the United Kingdom.
