  • Spinners keep Bangladesh to 227

    50 overs Bangladesh 227 (Mahmudullah 52, Narine 4-37) v West Indies

In a series dominated by spinners, Sunil Narine finally revived a faltering tour, nipping out three wickets in nine balls to open the floodgates at the top of the order, and finishing with 4 for 37 to restrict Bangladesh to a middling 227. Bangladesh began steadily, lost wickets in a clump, recovered in the middle overs and for the second time in as many games looked lost in the batting Powerplay. Mahmudullah resisted with a half-century but couldn't accelerate towards the end because of the pressure created by the loss of wickets.
Though the spinners found the conditions more to their liking compared to Khulna and tested the skills of the batsmen, Bangladesh will be disappointed by the number of soft dismissals, which included chipped shots towards fielders in catching positions on the off side, and top edges, which the captain Mushfiqur Rahim was guilty of.
Prior to the third one-dayer, Narine had taken only four wickets in as many matches on tour. Disappointing returns for a mystery spinner who was identified as a threat before setting foot in Bangladesh. He was back at his wicket-talking best, teasing the batsmen with his drift and turn, and getting the carom ball to beat the outside edge on several occasions.
Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque started the innings steadily, looking at ease against the seamers. Judging by the success of the Bangladesh spinners in the first two games, West Indies changed their tactics for this game by bringing in the extra spinner, Veerasammy Permaul, for the seam-bowling allrounder Andre Russell.
The introduction of spin helped West Indies snatch the initiative. Narine struck in his third over, inducing an edge to send back Tamim, who shaped to cut but was squared up by the extra bounce. Naeem Islam cut his first ball past point but was out the following ball, popping a leading edge to cover. Narine then trapped Anamul lbw with one that turned as he went forward to work it across the line.
Permaul too got into the act when he got Nasir Hossain spooning a catch to Kieron Pollard at short cover. Mushfiqur and Mominul Haque put together a breezy stand of 32 at nearly a run-a-ball, before Mominul chipped one straight to short cover. Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah restored order with a half-century stand. Mushfiqur was alert in putting away the short and wide deliveries outside off, punching past cover and rotating the strike. Mahmudullah was more aggressive, chipping down the track to Pollard and lofting over deep midwicket for a six. Mahmudullah brought up the fifty stand with a boundary to fine leg.
The batting Powerplay, taken in the 36th over, gave West Indies an opening where they picked up two wickets and conceded just 14 runs. The spinners bowling in tandem didn't make things any easier for Bangladesh. Mushfiqur departed in the first over of the field restrictions, trying to slog Permaul but got a tame top edge that swirled to point. The intention was right, but making room and slogging against the turn was always going to be risky.
Mahmudullah grafted towards his fifty with Sohag Gazi for company, but couldn't hang around till the end, departing with his side at an underwhelming 210 for 8 with four overs left. While the total may not appear daunting on paper, the Bangladesh spinners will be encouraged by the turn on offer. They will however need to guard against the dew, which prompted Darren Sammy to bowl first.
Bismillah, alhamdulillah, all praises due to Allah and may Allah increase the honor of Prophet Muhammad and protect our nation from any harm.
