Alviro Petersen won the toss, paid no heed to previous results, and chose to chase. In all three previous games, sides have won the toss and chosen to field, saying these grounds are difficult to defend, but have failed under the pressure of runs on board. The home team Lions, though, wanted to prove it is just an aberration.
Mumbai Indians chose two World Twenty20 winners among their four overseas players: Dwayne Smith and Kieron Pollard. Mitchell Johnson was given a debut. Lasith Malinga was his fellow quick. Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha were the two spinners. They pulled off a surprise by picking Dhawal Kulkarni over Munaf Patel, who was Man of the Match in his last match at the Wanderers.
Sohail Tanvir and Dirk Nannes were the two unorthodox left-arm quicks in the Lions XI, who made three changes to the side that lost their domestic final. Nannes took Ethan O'Reilly's place. Gulam Bodi came in ahead of Jonathan Vandiar. Dwaine Pretorius' place went to Zander de Bruyn.
