Australia's captain George Bailey won the toss and sent Pakistan in to bat first in the World Twenty20 Super Eights match in Colombo.
Following the strategy they employed successfully against South Africa, Australia have backed themselves to limit Pakistan to a target within the grasp of the in-form openers Shane Watson and David Warner.
Pakistan dropped one allrounder Yasir Arafat for another in Abdul Razzaq, in a match they must win to have their best chance of making the semi-finals.
Bailey named an unchanged team, meaning Xavier Doherty has retained his spot as the second spinner after coming in for the South Africa match. Only a very heavy defeat will prevent the unbeaten Australians from progressing to the semis.
Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 Cameron White, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Brad Hogg, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Xavier Doherty
Pakistan 1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Raza Hasan
