KABUL, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Afghan boxer Hamid Rahimi won the World Boxing Union (WBU) Championship by defeating his Belarusian rival in Hamburg, local Pajhwok Afghan News reported on Sunday.
Rahimi outpunched Ruslan Rodivich in the 8th round late Friday night in the German city, said Mujibullah Rahmani, the spokesman of Afghan Olympic Committee.
The Hamburg-based professional boxer won the WBU title due to a high degree of motivation, encouragement and support that he received from Afghanistan, the Afghan Athletes Union in Europe said.
Watched by WBU officials, Rahimi faced his Belarusian opponent in the 12-round bout that took place at the Event Centre "Le Royal" in Hamburg-Barmbek, said a statement from the union.

It was seen as an important step toward the realization of Rahimi's dream to host the first-ever professional boxing event in Afghan capital Kabul under the banner of "Fight For Peace."
The Afghan boxer was awarded the WBU gold belt for winning the title.
