The Los Angeles Lakers’ quest for a third straight National Basketball Association championship ended with a sweep at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks, who advanced to the Western Conference finals.
Jason Terry scored 32 points today and set an NBA playoff record with nine 3-pointers as the Mavericks defeated the Lakers 122-86 in Game 4 of their second-round series. Dallas made 20 3- pointers to tie a postseason record.
“It’s great to get through this series, they’re the defending champs,” Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 17 points, said in a televised interview. “This team is as deep and as good as any team I’ve been on here, so we’ll try to go for it.”
The Mavericks won the best-of-seven series four games to none and will face either the Memphis Grizzlies or Oklahoma City Thunder for a spot in the NBA finals. The Lakers became the sixth defending champions to get swept the next postseason and the first since the 2007 Miami Heat.
It may have been the last NBA game for Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who has said he plans to retire after this season. Jackson, who’s won a record 11 NBA championships, was fined $35,000 by the NBA earlier today for being publicly critical of referees after the Lakers’ Game 3 loss.
This was the first time a Jackson-coached team was swept out of the playoffs. Kobe Bryant, who scored 17 points to lead the Lakers, was swept for the third time in his career and the first since the 1999 postseason, the year before Jackson came to Los Angeles. Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum of the Lakers were ejected from the game during the fourth quarter, when Los Angeles trailed by as many as 35 points. Second Quarter Decisive
The Mavericks, the third seed in the West, outscored the second-seeded Lakers 36-16 during the second quarter to take a 63-39 halftime lead at American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Terry tied the NBA postseason record of nine 3-pointers with 2:58 left in the third quarter. Terry missed only one of his 10 3-point attempts and credited his good shooting day to his Mother’s Day breakfast.
“It was Mom’s cooking,” Terry said. “It’s Mother’s Day, so I know she’s here and in the stands.”
Teammate Peja Stojakovic hit all six of his 3-point shots and finished with 21 points, while Jose Juan Barea had 22.
With the Lakers trailing by 26 points, Odom was thrown out of the game with 9:06 remaining after a flagrant foul at midcourt on Nowitzki. Less than a minute later, Bynum elbowed Barea in the chest as the Dallas guard drove for a layup. Barea was knocked to the court and Bynum was immediately ejected, pulling off his jersey as he walked from the court and being jeered by the Dallas crowd.
Next up for the Mavericks is either the fourth-seeded Thunder or eighth-seeded Grizzlies. The Grizzlies lead the other Western Conference series 2-1 with Game 4 scheduled for tomorrow in Memphis.
The Atlanta Hawks host the Chicago Bulls tonight in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference matchup. The Bulls lead the best-of- seven series 2-1 after winning Game 3 in Atlanta.

Without Shaq (a Muslim), LA is nothing. I have been patiently waiting to see Kobes smile turn upside down. His ego is bruised LOL
LOL!!!! Shaq???? You have got to be kidding me right.....Lakers was better without Shaq...you think they missed his useless freethrows.....what was he good for.....he looked like one of those players that are just in the courts with no game. Poor Shaq, i think he was better off of the Lakers.
Anyways, as a long time Lakers fan, i feel bad for that last game. Though i did not watch it because i had to work that day, it was disappointing to hear about it. Thank goodness Artest was out! His 'attempts' at three pointers was pissing me off.......okay then
a lot of the good Laker players were taken out of the game
I feel bad for phil Jackson it was his last year, he should've won another ring

Without Shaq (a Muslim), Kobe (a Kafir) won TWO Championships in a row!
Its soooo amazing how many Laker haters there are. There are literally people who dont even have a favorite team or even watch basketball regularly, they just hate the Lakers for absolutely no reason?!?!?!
