Afghanistan take top prize
Nepal had been unbeaten in the tournament so far but it was Afghanistan who were the winners of the 2011 ACC U19 Elite Cup as they beat their closest rivals by 61 runs in an exciting final at Terdthai Cricket Ground yesterday.
Afghanistan chose to bat first and expertly paced their innings to reach 200 for 9 in their 50 overs.
Afsar Khan and Najibullah Zadran laid a solid base but it was the lower-order that saw their side to a more than useful total.
Noor-ul-Haq made 34 from 41 balls and Mohibullah Paak hit an unbeaten 36 from just 23 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes as Afghanistan accelerated towards the end of their innings.
Nepal's spinners failed to make an impact but Pradeep Airee was impressive in taking 5 for 43 with his medium pace.
Afghanistan had finished their innings strongly and they did even better at the start of Nepal's reply as Aftab Alam, the fastest bowler in the tournament, was given good support by Shir Mohammad.
Both took two wickets as Nepal were reduced to 31 for 4.
They never quite recovered despite the best efforts of Airee who added 59 runs to his five wickets. At the halfway stage Nepal were still on course at 99 for four but the run out of Rajesh Pulami proved a turning point.
Airee was caught at long on and the end came quickly as Najibullah took three wickets for five and Nepal were bowled out for 139 as Afghanistan triumphed by 61 runs.
Both teams will go on to play in the global qualifying tournament in Ireland and they are well on course to play in the next Under 19 World Cup.
Qatar beat Hong Kong by six wickets at AIT to finish in third place as player of the tournament Tamoor Sajjad took 3 wickets for 35 and followed with an innings of 41.
Nepal's Airee and Rahul Vishwakarma were batsman and bowler of the tournament respectively, while Malaysia won the spirit of cricket award.
