  • Dead Poets Society

Dead Poets Society is a 1989 America film starring Robin Williams and directed by Peter Weir. Set at a conservative and aristocratic boys prep school, it tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students to change their lives of conformity through his teaching of poetry and literature.

This is an older movie though one of my favorites. Has any one here ever seen it?

After I saw it the first time I started thinking a lot about language. Languages can be so rich, and yet many people speak so crudely. I don't mean when they are learning a language and don't yet possess a command of it. I mean vulgar words and cussing. I really do not like cussing. Sure, ones hears it in almost all western movies at least, but that doesn't make it honorable. I feel like it is verbal or written poverty when every few words I am forced to hear or read a 4-letter word.

But maybe I am as they say old-fashioned?

    Comments welcome......

Yep. Seen it too. Last class room scene is a tear jerker.
Definitely, one of my favorites. Not very realistic tho'.

One of my fav movies. A recommended watch for all high-school kids. And its not just for language and literature enthusiasts. Anyone who has had an inspirational teacher in their life can identify with the theme of the movie.

Islamic Course on The Parable of the Good Word

I have told some of you that I am presently taking an online course on Islam-this was from my reading today-and it reminded me of something Jasmine said quite some time ago-

"For Reflection Our everyday speech can be a source of truth and blessing, and it can be a manifestation of discord, negativity, egoism, and untruth. All spiritual traditions have teachings about right speech. We have been living with the "good word" of the Qur'an for some time. Now consider how we, ourselves, can be "firmly rooted, with branches towards the sky."
How can we use language to bring something positive into our everyday life? First we can monitor how we speak and what we choose to speak about. Perhaps we can begin to notice our own subtle (or not so subtle) manifestations of arrogance, judgment, and negativity. And to take the most positive approach, how can we speak with a pure heart? The Prophet Muhammad, (peace be upon him) said, "The best people are those who, when seen, remind you of God."
Reflect on the impact you have upon others. When others come into contact with you, do they come away from the experience in a state of remembrance or forgetfulness? Are they uplifted or brought low? Think about your own experience and how you can use language positively."
