Mr. Khurshid Khan, the all pervasive and indusive faculty-member at Govt. Degree college Mingawara, Swat was born on March 3, 1963 at Hazara, Nikpikhel, Swat to Amir Nawshad, an official in the then Swat-State. He was put to be educated at the standard available educational facility at that time in the area till SSC in 1979. After this he joined the prestigious Government Jahanzeb College Swat. He went through his F.Sc in 1981 as a pre-medical student against his grain thus leaving it there for good. He found himself in the right water as he chose Bachelors in Humanities, majoring in Political science, at the same college. He was successful in qualifying the degree programme in 1984. It was the time when he was embarking upon the last and the most enlightening period of learnings i.e. the Master program in History. The lure of the biggest city of Pakistan and the great seat of learning there, University of Karachi, was so overwhelming that he did not think of turning towards any other place. At Karachi University he studied for his masters in history and got the degree in 1987. Besides, he studied law and the LLB degree was awarded to him in 1988.
All along his student life, Khurshid not only wholeheartedly followed the academics but also sharpened and polished his political sense by actively participating in students’ political activities. It left a salutary effect on his understanding of political and economic processes of the past and present, which mould and shape history. His espousing and founding of Environmental Protection society (EPS) with other friends can surely be assigned to his mental make-up after all his academic and practical experiences. It was contemporaneous with his entering the education department NWFP (colleges) as lecturer in History in 1991. He got on with his job of teaching zealously and earned respect of the students and applause of the fellows and administrators. He turned out to be iconoclastic in his philosophy of teaching and student teacher relation. He over-emphasized, in order to inculcate, the role of culture for the development of a balanced and sound personality.
Prof. Khurshid has special interest in exploring such areas of regional history, which the historians tend to ignore although they have definite and palpable impact on the subsequent monumental historical happenings. His research paper on Sandakai Mullah is worth mentioning in this regard. Through the paper an attempt has been made to explore the period when Swat was entering from a chaotic society into an organized state and who played what role in the run-up to it and what gave impetus to the process.
He, along with his teaching responsibilities, has been serving EPS in various capacities from a member to a trainer to a council member to the vice-chair since the inception of the organization. He has received training from Agha Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP) in Community Development and Training of Trainers (TOT) and South Asia Partnership (SAP-Pak) in Community Empowerment.
He believes in the sanctity and power of knowledge. He not only plays his role as an educator with the same spirit but also bears all the strains to educate his own kids in the best possible way.
He is a popular teacher, caring father, trusted friend, intelligent socio-economic historian, connoisseur of music and arts and lover of Nature.
Khurshid has an unstaggering conviction that respecting ones roots by having steadfast and sincere attachment to ones culture and language in all the spheres of life lead to the aim of fulfilled living, the ultimate aim of progress.
