  • Afghans in California?

There's a chance I maybe moving to the Los Angeles area soon from the East Coast.

I wanted to ask all of you, what's living in California like for you? I'm especially asking more in the sense of cost of living and financial aspect and acquiring housing and such.

I have visited parts of California before so I have an idea of what it's like geographically and mildly culturally, but not to a great depth. Anyone here from that area want to give me your insights?

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

I live south of LA, but have been there a few times (been to OC lots though). Living in the big cities of California is very expensive. If you have a solid job lined up (or welfare) you should be fine, otherwise you’ll probably have to live in a ghetto area. Actually finding a home may be very difficult too. I haven’t heard anything about LA specifically, but most of the big cities in a California are currently going through housing crises that have inflated housing prices to ridiculous levels due to the shortage. To give you an example, one of the guys on my team just bought a 3 bedroom home for ~650,000. The home is not super impressive or in a rich area. It’s a normal house. Water is really expensive here too. Expect to pay more for water than you currently expect.

Traffic is really bad too by the way, but public transportation is garbage so a car is mandatory.

LA has a nice Muslim community though. There’s a lot you can do, but unfortunately a lot of it is not exactly Muslim friendly.

If I move, I'll be 50 miles East of L.A.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Is it in the mountains or the desert? If it’s the desert, prepare for crazy heat.

Price wise I think housing will probably be fine that far out, but other expenses will still be high (like water). Also, you should look into the composition of the city and how many Muslims there are. A lot of the small towns in California are full of racist rednecks, and may not have many Muslims, halal food, Masjids, etc.

Edit: do you mean Riverside? If so you probably don’t have to worry about the stuff I mentioned above, though housing will be an issue.

Yes. That's exactly where I meant, good guess...what's it like there?

That's ridiculous, that's worth more than my dad's house currently here on the East Coast.

L.A isn't that bad, relative to say San Francisco. There are some areas that are affordable, however, the traffic will without a doubt drive you nuts. If you think the east coast has traffic, wait till you see L.A

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I think the domain name registration had expired and was not renewed. It's happened a few times in the past, but I think the site was usually up quicker than this time.

Sorry to derail this thread, but I was surprised to see 400+ people visit the site within an hour of it coming back up. I didn’t know of the impact.

Besides discussion, I use this website for sources. There is a wealth of information on this forum and many of the sources I use are actually the ones you put here.
