I could give sources but I will just detail what I know from my own readings I have done on this topic.

Racism,exclusion, the concept of 'preferences' go hand in hand. In America after the end of slavery, whites indoctrinated women to exclude black males as marriage partners. In this sense, women were used in a way to enforce racial, economical, and social status differences.
