Unlike you, we Afghans know who we are and where we come from. We are committed to our conservative Islamic values, to our ethnic backgrounds and our cultures. Thats we don't hesitate to explore other ideologies and philosophies as long as it respects our core values. Afghans even if they turn into commies still respect their families, their history, their traditions, their heritage,.. thats why very few Afghans are white wannabes like Iranians or Arab/Middle Eastern wannabes like Pakis. Its a matter of self-confidence.

Interesting analysis but didn’t really answer my question about what Afghans find appealing about leftism.

I would like to ask you though what do you mean about our Indian roots and rejecting them? Do you mean our Hindu roots? Why shouldn’t we reject such roots now that we are Muslims? and what kind of religious extremism do we support?

Afghans don't really like leftism. That doesn't make any sense. We have a complex society. The only trait that bring us close to leftism is our egalitarianism.

I don't care about your Hindu roots, dude. Do as you wish. But we Afghans will always celebrate our heritage because we have self-confidence: we don't want just to be Muslims, we want also to be Afghans. Thats a key difference between Afghans and Pakis.

I've always wandered why Pashtuns and afghans are so susceptible to leftism. We Urdu-speaking Muslims who hail from places like UP, Delhi and Bihar have never ever been fond of leftism. I suppose its because we are educated, cosmopolitan, urban, and mercantile people...but then again aren't Pashtuns business minded people too?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA how the **** are they leftist? They are a bunch of nationalists who are mostly landowners and gangsters(as are all the other political parties of pak) who couldnt give a **** about ideology. Ive seen ANP people who at jalsas shout lar o bar and then go on rants about how much they hate majars.
Only idiots like them and you think they are leftists(liberalism is centrist so that doesnt make em leftist)

Cuz pashtuns believe in equality and our society is pretty leftist as well unlike indian society where the dude with power is treated like God and the rest like ****. This is why youll see more gangsters and badmashi in punjab and sindh than pakhtunkha

They certainly have Marxist roots and their ideology is defined as democratic socialism. Whether they are serious about that in practical terms is another story. All I see from ANP is a lot of red and portraits of the traitor Bacha Khan. The PPP is too technically a leftist party though it could be argued they too don't really care about ideology, just want to line their pockets.

Now I am only Pakistani on my mother's side who is Multani though her family hails from Gurdaspur district in Indian Punjab. My father is from Hyderabad Deccan and is a Hyderabadi Urdu-speaker. Historically my community has always been distrustful of the kind of ethnic based leftist politics that destroyed the Muslim world (Nasserism in Egypt, Baathism, NAP in NWFP and Bhutto's Peoples Party). We are not and have never been peasants. This kind of leftist ethnic nationalism has always been a thing of the uneducated peasant masses, though their leadership ironically hails from the aristocratic feudalist class. We are middle class people and have been hurt by policies like nationalization and the stupid quota system. Furthermore we are socially conservative and very much attached to our religious identity. This is why we absolutely detest these leftist parties like PPP and ANP. It is not out of any enmity toward Pathans or Sindhis, it is much deeper than that.
But as you yourself admitted, these parties capitalize on the ethnic hatred that Pathans and Sindhis have for "Muhajirs" whom they regard as Indian foreigners who came to their ancestral lands to exploit them. Of course nothing can be further from the truth. Our people are urban and business class, their people were peasants, who do you think was going to dominate the urban centers of the new country? It's common sense, but they resent the reality.

I still don't understand how you guys actually went full blown communist (i.e. Parcham and Khalq) and the PDPA regime. That is totally inconceivable for us in Pakistan to go communist. It's just not in our DNA to be communists, even when we were under direct British rule. We just value the free market too much. Communism is for those peasants like in Russia and China who don't know how to be shopkeepers and merchants. We Muslims have always excelled at small business its in our blood.

And the Muhajirs he was talking about were Afghan Muhajirs, not Hindustani ones.

You say "you guys" as if the entire country went commie. Communism was adopted by some of the elites, and was never popular among the common people. The same happened in every country. There are still people in Pakistan pushing for communism. The reason communism temporarily took hold in Afghanistan is not because we had some special affinity for it, but because the Soviet Union bordered us and valued the geopolitical benefits of having a friendly puppet state there.

There is no such a gene that attracts someone to a specific ideology or employment.

Ok my fault I took it too literally.
Because of the many nonsense some are claiming here the last days I lost my sense for recognizing exaggeration.
