No, you can't. Most of Pashtuns in the north and west are Persianspeaker and they speak it as well as Tajiks.

There was this guy working in my uncle´s house in Herat. I didnt even know he was a Pashtun until one day he told me "me Awghon astom az Shindand". He didn't know how to speak Pashto but his Farsi was pure "qaleez Herati".

Many relatives of mine are Herati "Pashtuns" Personally I don't even consider them so. They can't speak Pashto and they are integrated into our culture. Most of them, even those who brag about their Pashtunyat, hang out with Tajiks. They are Tajiks. They just haven't realized it yet.

Okey....@ 4:29. This beautiful lady, can you tell if she is Pashtun or Tajik by accent?

Kabulis, Heratis and province people obviously have different accents/dialects...

I think maybe Karzai has a typical Pashtun accent when speaking Dari

Interesting. Do you think that might be regional though? Would a pashtun from, say jalalabad, sound Tajik when he spreaks farsi?

That lady is speaking Farsi with some accent from northern provinces, not sure where, may be Takhar, Badakhshan or Mazari. Thats definitely not Pashto accent.

In Jalalabad there are many Tajiks most of them still Persianspeaker. One close friend of mine is a Shia Tajik from Baghlan. His wife is a Sunni Persianspeaker Tajik from Jalalabad (can't remember exactly where, its just somewhere near to Maipar).

Afghanistan is a melting pot. There is no purity in there anymore, just cultural spheres. In the north and in the west Farsi rules. In the south Pashto (Farsi has a strong presence in there) is the main language but most of southern Pashtuns tend to mingle with Tajiks. Herati-Kandahari intermarrying happen very often. My uncle from my mother side married to a Kandahari girl (she is a Shia Persianspeaker Tajik though). Tajiks and Pashtuns are not solid blocks. We are closer than you guys think

Eastern provinces are "ignorant" when it comes to Farsi culture/language so I guess they are the "purest" Pashtuns (there are huge Tajik pockets in many of those provides though) in Afghanistan.

With any language, it's possible to have an accent while speaking a certain language unless it has been part of your routine from a young age or you have learnt it first hand. (By mimicking other Pashtuns and not from someone else who knows the language)
There are Pashtuns speaking Dari and Dari speakers who speak each other's language and you could never tell that it's not their first language. But for those with whom the accent is an influence, it's pretty obvious. You can tell from their accents that they are Pashtuns speaking Dari, pashaies speaking Pashto or northerners speaking Pashto.
I have been speaking Pashto since I was two but I still sound different than my father or his family do because they came from the mountains. It takes me a week to get a hang of the simplest things they say because of how heavy their accent is. My father has spent over 20 years in Kabul and his Dari is still heavily accented.

As for this woman, she sounds like someone who came from the mountains of the north. Even her Dari has a strong accent in it. But yeah, she is not a Pashto speaker.

As DZJ said, it depends how much exposure they have had through out their life. Most Pashtuns do have an accent when speaking Dari as do Dari speakers when speaking Pashto but Pashtuns are generally better at pronouncing foreign languages because Pashto language has all the letters of Dari/Arabic/Urdu/English plus other letters and sounds which are unique to Pashto. Dari and Urdu is a piece of cake if you know Pashto.

A Pashtun who only speaks Dari is not a Pashtun. Because being a Pashtun means someone who speaks Pashto.

There are many Pashtuns who speak Dari as their second language. They are of two kinds. The first type are people who have spent years interacting with Dari speaking people. When they speak Dari, nobody notices anything.

Then there are those who have learned to speak Dari recently or they haven't spent enough time interacting with people. Only this particular subset of Dari speaking Pashtuns have an accent.

There are also many persianized Pashtuns in Kabul who speak Pashto with an accent. Some of the more famous ones are Ashraf Ghani and other politicians. They have a think Dari accent when they speak Pashto.

I think most people have answered it. Pashtuns born and bred Dari zaban speak it as well as Tajiks, and Tajiks born and raised around Pashtu speakers speak it as well as Pashtuns. My grandmothers are Tajik and I only found out at age of 15/16 they're Tajik who used to speak Dari as first language.

Pashtuns and Tajiks across Afghanistan, especially in Loy Nangarhar area (Mashriqis), are nearly unrecognisable from one another. Our language, culture, habits, traditions, etc are so heavily influenced by one another that people won't even realise they're actually speaking two different languages at home.
